Getting ready to replace many of the incandencant exterior bulbs with LED versions. Such as turn signals, reverse, marker lamps and fog lights. Gonna keep the headlights and high beams standard for now but install new ones since I will have the housing off anyway
update : Got the 194 LED bulbs installed in the Mirrors. And these bulbs were rated Canbus approved. No hyper flash at all. Also took the time to paint the top of the light housing with white model paint thinking to would help reflect some more light. What a nice brighter difference.

Hope to do more today

Had a busy day off today. Spent the morning and early afternoon working on my daughter's Escape. Did another spill and fill on the transmission. The fluid is looking quite good now so I'll wait a few more thousand km before touching it again. I worked like a dog getting the swaybar bushings and end links put on. Not complicated but took a lot of up and down and force. Managed to not have to cut any links off. She drives pretty nice now!

We had a bit of snow, enough to get the sleds to the trails. It was garbage hard but still fun to get out. I then took the quad out and sank it. Still lots of fun!

update : had to install the new Turn Signal replay as the 3157 LEDS in the headlight housings caused the hyper flash. all fixed now. Interesting thing tho, I found a hidden toggle switch mounted in recessed part of the access panel. Had the truck for 10 years and over 200k miles and never saw this before. Thru the switch and the truck still starts and everything works. so no idea as have not traced the wires. I guess I have a new tinker project .. lol

Last day at home with Mum. We have to leave around 7:15 tomorrow morning for the airport.

It was good to visit but I'm kind of looking forward to getting back to Ohio...yeah, I know, right?

Made a trip to see my parents this past week. Missed the worst of the storm so I only used 4x4 for 160km. Had a good visit and picked up some more tools. We are talking 40 year old Craftsman radial arm saw, table saw, belt sander, boxes of tools and a Craftsman tool box. Not sure of the age but I remember most of this stuff in the late 80s. Dad is pretty happy I plan on using it and it's not ending up in the dump. Just have to clean and organize everything now.

Don't be surprised if you need to purchase a new A/C Delco (no aftermarket here or the same codes will reoccure!). It is a "easy fix" and resonable cost also. Most folks around these parts (me included) have replaced the fuel cap.

Did some maintenance on my 3500 again, some being preventative. Did a tire rotation, greased the slide pins and cracked the bleeders. Liked what I saw as the pins were good and no air or dark fluid came out.

Now the fun..... got the front rotors and wheel bearings cracked free and coated with anti seize. On the outside they did not look bad but 8 years and they were seized on. Used a bolt and nut with an impact to push the rotors off from the brake caliper mounting ears (thanks YouTube for this) and then using a socket, extension to wedge on the wheel bearing bolts and using the power steering to squeeze it.

I then popped the ABS sensor output and gave the sealed bearings several pumps of semi synthetic nlgi 1.5 and worked it in.

My buddy stayed late to help and it actually went well considering. Tomorrow I will brake the back rotors free and button her all up.

Too late for the the whole story but today I drove close to 8 hours to and from the junkyard I frequent.

While there I extinquished some suspicious fires most certainly arson. A fellow at the yard said the last time a fire was there they lost 85 vehicles and were closed for a month!

I also succesfully removed a passenger side blend door actuator without cutting the dash metal or moving the heater module. I always wondered if I could do that.

Troubleshooting a P0455 code. Check engine light came on yesterday while out with wife. Gas cap seemed to be ok. Truck ran fine all day. Scanned this morning to get the code and cleared code as well. Cleaned off cap, cap ring and opening of filler neck, so we'll see.
update : took an 85mile errand round trip and no CEL light. nice. If it does pop up again, i replace the gas cap and take it from there.

Do keep in mind that the P0455 test pretty much only runs ONCE a day if that. And pretty much ONLY on a DEAD COLD startup.

So it makes no difference how far or long you drive.

CONDITIONS FOR RUNNING THE DTC
- DTCs P0107, P0108, P0112, P0113, P0116, P0117, P0118, P0122, P0123, P0125, P0452, P0453 are not set.
- The engine is running.
- The ignition voltage is between 10-18 volts.
- The barometric pressure (BARO) is more than 75 kPa.
- The fuel level is between 15-85 percent.
- The engine coolant temperature (ECT) is between 4-30°C (39-86°F).
- The intake air temperature (IAT) is between 4-30°C (39-86°F).
- The start-up ECT and IAT are within 9°C (16°F) of each other.
- The vehicle speed sensor (VSS) is less than 121 km/h (75 mph).

Took advantage of the cold front that passed through last night, got to work on installing the soft starter on the AC unit. Had done the research and mapped which wires went with which pins on the cap, so that was the easiest part of the process. The most time consuming was mounting the damn thing

Had a bunch of holes in the panel already, so used some painters tape to transfer my chosen set of holes, to the back of the device's mounting plate.

20250408_111257_2.jpg

After getting everything wired up, I put it in a position that made it easy to bundle most of the wires and keep things tidy... But the problem was, the unit was too far to one side, and you couldn't put the cover back on :duh:

20250408_113203_2.jpg

Ended up relocating the bracket to the left a bit, and flipping the unit 180*, problem solved. Popped the disconnect back in place, lowered the temp on the t-stat to trigger a start, and everything came on with no odd noises or issues.

Was feeling pretty productive, so I got a couple other things done outside. Not pictured: Replaced a couple of wooden pickets on the fence between myself and the neighbor's back yard. Nails had rusted out and let go, so punched those through, ran some screws, so those are all set.

There's a utility area behind my house, that's somewhat shared with the county pumping station. Milton destroyed the gate to this area, and as many times as the county sent people out to deal with the pumping station, they never fixed the gate, just left it laying there. Took it upon myself to do something about it. It had a metal frame, with all the wood bolted to it, so that made it easier to deal with. The hinges were still attached to a 4x4 which had snapped off at the ground somewhere. I grabbed some 6" timberloks out of the tool chest, and ran those through the 4x4 of the gate, into the neighboring 4x4 for the wood fence. Of course there was a pretty good sized gap on the other side, about 6" but that's better than being wide open.

I often see people get nosey and poke their heads in there, but the overgrown weeds and brush turn them away. Didn't stop people from dumping a lot of bags, and trash, so hopefully that will stop. Grabbed a scrap of 2x4 that was laying around, ran one screw through one end that the board can pivot around, into the opposing post to form a cheap gate latch. That will keep it closed and not swinging in the wind.

Did get my permit approval from the county for the transfer switch, so I'll start moving on that pretty soon. Probably punch some knock outs, and do some test fitting to check the wire length this weekend to make sure I can mount it where I want it, and if I'll have to extend any of the wires that need to reach the higher breakers or not. 🤞

I`m also interested in the soft start for both the house and RV A/Cs. Have to get rid of this damned snow first.

Took the diesel and Trailblazer up to Edmonton last week. Took some horses to a new owner and then picked up a new to us three horse bumper pull. We needed a smaller trailer for running around and smaller jobs, need to keep the 6 horse for shows.

So we towed the three horse with the truck and the borrowed 2 horse went back 400+km with the Trailblazer. It's only about 3400 pounds and towed not to bad but it's no comparison. The truck tows heavier, faster and uses much less fuel.

Diagnosing an intermittent electrical problem on the CJ7.

I replaced the original computer controlled carburetor with a Howell EFI kit based on a GMT400 ECM & TBI setup back in 2019 and had no problems until about 6 months ago.

While driving the fuel pump quits and the CEL goes out. It will usually recover after 5 minutes or so without any intervention on my part.

At first I though it might be a power distribution or ground problem but after inspecting the harness for breaks, bad connectors and poor grounds everything checks out OK.

Hooked up an old XP laptop running WinALDL and was able to connect to the ECM; verified no codes and all sensor data looked good. Wiggled all the wires with the engine running and no problems.

I am now left with the ECM as the only culprit (both the fuel pump relay and the CEL are controlled by the ECM through to ground). This is supported by the fact that several times recently at Key-On the CEL would not light but the engine started anyway.

My suspicion is that the previous voltage spiking issues (replacing the alternator & ignition switch fixed that problem) may have damaged the ECM .

Replacement is straightforward. Order the basic unit from AZ (reman, of course), then I just need to swap in the PROM & calpak from the old unit into the new one.

One more baby step in my auxiliary power project. Finally got around to mounting up my transfer switch to the garage wall, and running the conduit into the main panel. Slight issue, the concentric knockout I used didn't want to play nice, and some of the larger rings popped loose, when the one I wanted came out, so while the lock nut does have something to grab onto, it's not tight and wiggles around. :duh:

Gonna have to order a set of reducing washers, and take out the loose rings to get things cleaned up before wiring things together. That conduit between them runs to the shed out back, if that wasn't there, I would be able to mount the switch closer, and all of the existing wiring would reach the desired breakers. Most of them will reach fine, but the top 4 on the right side (for the AC and air handler) are too short. Will have to extend those.

Put some time in on my daughter's Escape. The driver front wheel bearing was making some noise. Napa only had their house brand available, the SKF were national backorder....

Anyways, I tore the thing down, which was not bad. I get her down to her bones and find the ball joint boot torn from age but it feels like it's brand new. Hell it looks original, no snap ring, no grease zerk and appropriate amount of rust... well I don't want to replace it with an inferior part. Napa did not have a boot kit and I'm not waiting for a mail order. Bought a new ball joint and stole the boot. Perfect.

I knock out the hub, which disintegrates the bearing, chisel out the retaining ring and finally knock out the bearing. I had the new parts in the freezer over night and knocked in the new bearing, using the old one as a driver. Not wanting to get the new bearing wedged in, the last little bit I used a socket on the inner race..... real dumb move, Brian. Its a split inner... and it separated a bit. Pressing the hub in made it separate more and it had play on final install.

Well in hindsight, I should have just pressed the inner race back together as it's held together between the CV shaft but I had a brain fart. I knocked it all out in defeat and was going to get a new bearing. Well then I figured I would try and salvage it so I could at least use the vehicle a bit.... cleaned her up, new grease and put it in. We'll it has no play but groans on the road.

So, lesson learned. No touching the inner race and support the back side when pressing in the hub.....

Went to Autozone to pick up supplies to charge up the AC system on the Volvo XC70 and change the oil on the CJ7. The Volvo took a whole can12oz/340g can of R134A; the compressor is no longer continually cycling so all good now (note: total system capacity is 700g so it was down nearly 50%; not too bad considering this is the first time it needed charging in 18 years!). Will change the oil on the Jeep tomorrow.

Finally buckled down to finish the electrical panel job. Got the reducing washers in place, so the conduit fits securely and doesn't move or wiggle. Got my wires run and connected, most of them were simple and straight forward. Used solder filled heat shrink connectors for the splices, but they didn't behave as I thought they would.

The heat shrink part did what you'd expect, but the solder rings didn't melt, and reflow like I thought they would. It was more like they softened, and conformed to the wire splice as the plastic shrank. :blinkhuh: In a couple of small spots, I could see where the solder reflowed among the wire strands, but it wasn't complete. After the 1st two doing that, I swapped the heat gun for my hot air soldering station. Didn't have any better luck there. Cranked the heat setting to the max, and the only change was melting through one of the plastic areas NEXT to the solder ring. :duh: Cut that one out and put in a fresh one.

I didn't have the same gauge/type of wiring to experiment with, with the twisters, so I couldn't make pretty twists like I saw in all the videos. For the 8 gauge wiring to the AC unit, did a good wrap of the switch wiring around that, used the drill attachment to tighten that up, then the wire nut attachment to torque down the nuts. Super tight, and didn't pull off. Zip tied the lower areas together, and tucked things away. Flipped the main back on, then flipped the switches to the line side, and the house came back on. Everything's running, and the house is still standing, so next step is pass inspection.

20250518_145847_2.jpg

With that done, turned my attention to the garage door. Used to have keys for the main door's lock, but no idea what happened to them, so got a new lock cylinder. It was a direct fit, so I just reused all the existing hardware. Just had to mark and snap off the linkage piece to fit properly in the lock, and that was done. So now, if I lose power for an extended period, I can clock the big door closed, or open 6" as there are provisions in the rails for the 2 lock rods. That gives me plenty of room to run the exhaust pipe for the generator out into the driveway, without worry of someone being able to get the door open to steal it (if I was dead sleep to the world, and didn't noticed that loud ass motor stop running, or everything turn off in the house at the same time :hahano:)

Since I forgot to get some fuel for the generator over the weekend, stopped on my way home and filled my small 1 gallon can, for some testing.

20250521_190013_2.jpg

Hooked up the big cable, fired up the generator and let it settle in. Cut the main breaker, then flipped all the transfer switches over. Generator barely had a hiccup when the AC compressor kicked on, and I couldn't notice any changes when everything else turned on, other than the wattage meters leaning a little bit further. And I mean a LITTLE bit! Loads were pretty evenly distributed, with roughly 2000 watts on each side.

20250521_174343_2.jpg

Have the AC, air handler, 2 refrigerators, lights and outlets for the kitchen, living room, master bed/bath and my front bedroom. Have a 30 amp cable which I'll cut off one end, strip the wires and make a 30 foot pigtail to wire directly to the water heater that can be plugged in as needed to avoid freezing showers.

Generator ran for about an hour and 15 minutes from that 1 gallon of gas. It's got an 8 gallon tank, so roughly 10 hours of run time on a full tank, plus whatever I'll have in reserves. I can work with that. Since it's dual fuel, I'll be investing in a good sized propane tank to keep in the shed for emergency backup purposes, and at some point need to see how everything runs off that, but for now, this is a long time project checked off the list! :2thumbsup:

Last weekend I picked up a bearing install tool and seeing as it was on sale, a Cummins barring tool.

After my little northern excursion (worked a little rez called Dillon, Saskatchewan), I popped out the bearing on the Escape and exchanged it at Napa. As luck would have it, they had the SKF bearing and hub now in stock. Paid the difference and walked out.

The install tool was the cats ass! Got her swapped out in no time. Now she's butter smooth.

This evening I will hopefully get the garden started....
