LED Mod Thread

Mike, I really don't understand why you're so apprehensive about this mod. The only way you would break something is if you went bull-in-a-china-shop while taking things apart, or if you left your soldering iron on the circuit board for way too long. Since you've already modded several modules already, I know you won't do either of these things.

My only hesitation (in your shoes) would be if those bulbs ARE LEDs already, there will be inline resistors somewhere on the board, dropping the voltage from 12-14 down to 3.x Therefore the panels would not be very bright either, since they have resistors built into them as well. Easy way to tell, is expose the circuit board and look at the contact pads. If they are LED, there will be a +/- silk screened onto the board. If they are not LED, then mod away.
I guess I'm apprehensive because I don't feel like I have enough experience doing this type of stuff......I'm hoping to eventually have the knowledge to tackle any mod......but right now I'm taking baby steps. :book:

30 watt Cree LED reverse lights, oh yeah. Can't wait to pop these suckers in.

And the first part of my LED dome upgrades, the panels for the cargo area. Supposed to be these snazzy new Samsung SMDs that are even brighter than 5050s. Guess we'll see. I'm going to have to wire them together but no biggie. That lens is a bear to get off though, felt like I was going to break it and it still wasn't coming loose.

Yeah, that cargo light lens is a bitch. The loop on the main housing for mine is cracked down the middle, and it still has a death grip.

I'm ready to put some more LEDs in my ride......this time I'd like to put them under each seat to light up the floor......I want them to come on when the interior lights come on.....do I need to run the wires to the overhead lights by each door?

Kinda wondered if those led panels could be wired together or not

Anything can be wired together if you don't mind a little wire snipping and splicing

I'm a little miffed that the rest of my dome LEDs are on a truck somewhere between here and Cleveland. They were supposed to be delivered today but they didn't show up.

I should have taken a pic of how I mounted those panels. They have double sided tape but there isn't anything for them to stick to... so I snipped up a tin can and make a bracket for each board :rotfl:

When it gets dark I'll see exactly how bright those reverse bulbs really are.

I was concerned about there being too much resistance and the panels not working properly...hmm may need to get some panels from Walmart and try this out then with some double sided tape in my blazer.

Since the resistors are built into the panels and not the pigtails, each panel sees full voltage, just as it would by itself, so you're good.

Would you do the same with lights at the divers feet.....or did you wire them to something different?
What you're wiring up doesn't matter as much as how you want it to function and where it's triggered from. If you say "I want this to come on when XYZ comes on..." Then that's what you tap into, anywhere along that circuit. If there's some other function that happens to coincide with your target, then you can use that too, you'd just have to determine what that is, if there is such another function. :twocents:

He does. Give him some time, real life might have him occupied at the moment. Future posts and follow up should probably be made in his thread, where he's more likely to see them than in here.

Awesome...def items to add to the list.

So the last of my LEDs arrived today, and I promptly put the first one in turned 90 degrees and blew the fuse like a moron

Then I spent the next 10 minutes trying to figure out which fuse runs the dome lights since GM's naming scheme in the fuse box is ridiculously cryptic :hissyfit: (edit: it was fuse #4 by the way, labeled TBC 3, who would have guessed that?)

But, they're all in and they all work. Not as bright as I thought they might be, but I didn't really want blinding bright light either (except in the cargo area I suppose). It was still daylight when I put them in and I've been working since, but I'll see how they look when I get home shortly.

Sometime I feel like GM might as well went this route with the Fuse Box text

Anyone know if TXBlazer still sales the side mirror turn signal LEDs........I sent him a PM but no reply yet?
He will get back to you trust me it took a couple weeks to get a hold of him for me also[emoji4]

Blckshdw, I'm still having problems with my right side lights sometimes hyperflashing.....you said that I could hook a load resistor up and it should stop the hyperflashing......where would I put it?

Mount it on something metal, connect it to the turn signal and ground.

Sorry to keep asking questions......you said connect it to the turn signal......do I connect it to the turn signal in the side mirror or under the hood. Don't know that it matters but like I said before if I take the LED out of the side view mirror turn signal and replace it with a regular bulb it doesn't hyperflash.

Hoping I'm not stepping on any toes, but I'd say that most of us, Blckshdw included, would rather hear questions and then see a great job done instead of asking how to correct something that a member didn't ask questions about.

OK, so I did some research and learned that the side view turn signal wiring goes behind the door panel where it connects to the mirror control on the window assembly thing......is this the wiring I need to connect my load resistor so my side mirror turn signal will stop hyper flashing? :helpme:

Got another idea for a mod today while filling up at the gas station... lol

I don't know if it's quite the look i'd like on my TB, but perhaps one of you fine gents would like it on your TB or Voy. There is a small gap inbetween the rear window and the frame it sits in. The gap is just big enough to have an LED strip shine through. You could rig an LED strip to the brake lights/turn signals. Or if you had one of the strips that is able to switch between red & white, you could rig that type of strip up to both the brakes and reverse lights, that way the corresponding color will come on depending if you're braking or reversing. I think it's an interesting idea. I don't know if it's the look for my TB though, but all I ask is if you do this mod, just give credit to good old Capote

Put the load resistor in the front. Easier access to the wiring, and plenty of metal to mount it to, without worrying about clearance for the window to come down.

OK.....so at the front turn signal where the connection goes into the back of the bulb socket, is there where I put the load resistor? There's a blue, brown and black wire......I assume the black is the ground.....and that's what I ground to right? Which one do I connect the other end of the load resistor?

You already know what to connect it to. Trust yourself and just try it on your own. That's the best way to learn. We all know you have what it takes to get these in.

You're ready, you just haven't realized it. That mod bug is already with you, just hasn't woken up yet. :deal:

I'm just glad mine is too doped out on pain and cold meds to do much...though it was eying up the idea of led quad tails a couple nights ago
