That's a red coloured Black bear, quite common in BC. If you look closely at the ears, they are fairly large in proportion to the head, and rather pointed.The Grizzly/Brown's ears are short and rounded. The Black's claws are also much shorter, the front shoulders have no hump, and the rear end is higher than the front when walking. They're also about 40%-50% smaller than a Grizzly of the same age. About 35 years ago, I took a Grizzly of the same age, 3 to 4 years, and he is 6' nose to tail, instead of the 4' of this one, and weighed more than twice as much, almost 400 lbs. Look near the left side of the photo below, and you'll see him approaching the camper, after being chased off numerous times, including a shot into the gravel very near him, just prior to this picture.
