Are you referring to a tank as a howitzer?
Our Howitzers that look like "tanks" are actually called M109A6 Paladin, Self-Propelled Howitzer. A lot different than tanks. A tank can fire and move at the same time, a Paladin can only fire from a stationary position. The whole general idea behind Paladins is fire capability and being able to fire and move out before the enemy can even figure out where our rounds just came from.

Nice. I was confused because this is what we refer to as a howitzer, the M777. No way four people could sleep inside of it :rotfl:

I never had the opportunity to be on an M777, but it's a helluva lot more fun along with more comradere within the gun section. It's more a team effort on the M119 & M777. On the Paladin it's mostly the #1 man doing everything. The driver just drives and idles up when the hydraulics are activated, the gunner just loads the powders, and the chief just sits there in his seat and does his thing

Your chief is the highest ranking on your howitzer?

M777 is awesome. I have been on both sides of it. Pulling the lanyard to fire and also the one calling for a fire mission.

As awesome as these howitzers are, they are not effective when trying to hit a single target on foot running through the desert. You would have thought this guy was the terminator.

Yeah chief is the highest. Yeah our howitzers aren't really practical anymore, especially the Paladin. No need to have it in service anymore. We're not in any type of combat situation downrange where we need to scoot and shoot. It would only serve a purpose in conventional warefare against another super power. MLRS systems are a lot more efficient and cost effective. We just like to shoot a lot of rounds because there's such a surplus of ammunition. I've seen and shot rounds from Vietnam era. Up until maybe 3-4yrs ago we were still using powder bags from that era too, but powder bags have been phased out anyway now. We just use MAC charges now.

Wow rounds from Vietnam. Ever have any issues? Misfires or duds?
Never experienced ether. But at Bragg earlier this year, a soldier lost his life when a powder prematurely went off in their M777. Turns out we had powders from the same lot #'s here at Ft.Stewart as the ones his unit was using. We had to turn in every powder with those same lot #'s.

That's tough. Worst way to lose a life is during training. I have had to deal with a similar situations with 60mm mortars.

Yeah, we've been lucky to never have lost a soldier in a training exercise. Had a few injuries, but nothing serious.

What sucks is I have a chiro appointment right after work, and working on the truck right after that is a bad idea  Was hoping it would get here before today so I could install it before.
