I was wondering why that was brighter. The seat/side mirror memory button is awesome. I am program 1 and the wife is program 2. I hate when I finally get my seat adjusted perfectly then it gets moved. Seat memory is an amazing idea.

it's a little 3k# atv winch on a sportsman's guide winch carrier. not very beefy but has been very useful getting cars unstuck in snow and it doesn't weigh 200#. I'll have to look where i picked up the lights

Nice. My 12,500 winch with steel cable was on 95ish lbs and with the synthetic it is only about 65ish. Let me know about the lights. I like how you just drill a hole to mount em. Plus they look sturdy.

This is the winch I have

The wireless remote is really nice.

You can find the lights by searching for "black license plate LED 12V"
but these are the same ones
http://www.ebay.com/itm/UN3F-2x-White-LED-Car-Auto-License-Plate-Screw-Bolt-Light-Bulbs-Black-12V-/271228441298

I had some QC issues with the first set I got, LED's angled, not sealed, etc... but they work pretty good.

I have a couple of those lil winches laying around. They are handy. I debated adding the wireless to my winch, but I can run my controller over the hood and operate it inside the cab as is and that was the reason I tried to use to justify it. Seems that wireless is becoming standard on newer ones though. I will likely be sure to get that option if my winch goes on the trailer and get a newer one.

Those are cheap so I can buy a few and give them a whirl. Thanks for the link!

The holiday mod season is approaching and I'm looking to upgrade my LED tails. Right now I have all cheapo led bulbs in stock boards.
These bulbs work and the 27-SMD ones I have in the turns look really cool, they just aren't as intense as I want.
I am going to try my hand at modifying my boards to be non-srck (as well as quad-park), and I'd like to buy new bulbs to really finish off the mod.

For the reds I'm looking for something like this (18SMD, 165 lumen)
https://www.superbrightleds.com/moreinfo/s-series-bulbs/3157-led-bulb-dual-intensity-18-smd-led-tower/802/#/tab/Specifications
But I'm wondering if it would be worth the extra $$$ for 500 lumen?
https://www.superbrightleds.com/moreinfo/s-series-bulbs/3157-can-bus-led-bulb--dual-intensity-26-smd-led-tower/1263/#/tab/Specifications

Is the difference between 165 lumen and 500 lumen is worth $2 per bulb?

You're talking over 2x the brightness, so IMO yes.

I have no comparable lights to test IRL, so yeah, it was serious.
Just looking at videos/pictures online it's hard to get an idea of how great the difference is between the two. Plus all of the reviews for both bulbs are along the lines of "yeah, it's bright".

I have some 1170 lumen 6000k LED lights and they're extremely bright, but that's all I really have to use as a baseline.

Prices can change at any time. Your best bet is to search the common outlets. Ebay, Amazon, or do some searching on shopping.google.com.

What about the difference in the watts? I've seen 25w 7w and even 60w? Which is best?
Plug 'n play bulbs don't put out THAT much light, and for turn/brake/reverse lights there is no need. HIDs run 35w or 50w, so for someone to say their 3157 bulbs rival that, is false advertising, and you should shop elsewhere.

Bulbs that use 5050 sized LEDs are probably the best balance of brightness and cost. The new Samsung 5630 chips are slightly larger and brighter, but those bulbs will be more expensive. The bulbs with smaller chips will be cheaper and more available since they are older technology so to speak.

Edit: After re-reading your first post, you're not talking about the Cree kits that Kevin (Dfwwiz) sells for headlights are you? That's a whole different animal than your stated application.

Out of curiosity, Im looking for 921 Led Reverse bulbs for my saab. Im overwhelmed when it comes to finding a pair that I want. I wanted to know how many watts a standard halogen bulb was, and found out it was around 17.8 watts with 264 lumens. In your opinions which 921 reverse bulb should I purchase?

I found this off of ebay and didn't know if it was too much light.

If it's in your price range, go ahead and pull the trigger. I don't think I've ever heard of someone complaining some PnP bulbs they bought output too much light, so I wouldn't worry about that.

What kind of vehicle do you have to have 921s for reverse lights?

Yeah, if you have the money, go for it. Those should be bright, those special "bubbled" chips are brighter than the standard flat LEDs. For reverse lights, you want them to be as bright as possible (I do at least).

-If you want, I could do some prowling and maybe find a better deal than that.

I have an idea and would like to get some feedback. Why not place 3 or 4 LEDs in series in order to:

1) reduce the wattage wasted across the resistor.
2) eliminate the resistor altogether.

For instance with 4 LEDs in series a 1ohm resister is recommended and that 1ohm resistor disipates 1/1000 of the wattage that the 4 LEDs dissipates.

:tiphat: Welcome to the forum.

That's generally considered the best practice, and makes your circuit as efficient as possible, as long as your application requires multiple LEDs on that circuit. Of course, for the cases where you're swapping for individual bulbs, or spaces are too tight to have multiple LEDs, you can't go that route and have to use a bigger resistor.

Thanks Blckshdw. I came here when I found out that the roadie guy was here.

I am planning my instrument cluster LED upgrade and want it really bright.

Is there a forum link to the best/recommended LED for the cluster ? Im having trouble navigating the new site.

What color do you plan to go with? You really don't want the cluster glaringly bright, because it will throw off your vision at night. Your pupils will adjust to the brightness directly in front of you, rather than on the output from your headlights, resulting in reduced distance vision.

From other posts in this thread, white is obviously going to give you the brightest result. Blue and green are usually pretty good. Once you get into purple/UV and red, you may want to run LED strips around the backside of the cluster face as aux lighting to help eliminate hot spots from the individual LEDs.

As far as a 'best' recommendation, there really isn't one. Most of us opt to go with no-name Ebay specials from a bulk purchase when first starting out. As long as you keep them below their max current rating, you should be good to go. If you want to splurge on getting Cree, LumiLED, Nichia, Osram, or any of the other big name manufacturers, then by all means, go for it, but it's not that big of a deal, especially if you're just starting out. Always better to make your mistakes and go through your growing pains using the cheap stuff

Many thanks!.. I was thinking of soldering the wires of an LED light panel (that are sold for the dome light) onto each of the bulb connectors on the cluster. Then I never have to solder again, I can change panels with just the mini bayonet connector. They come with the two sided adhesive tape to keep them in place.

I see your point on the cluster being too bright, great advice. I will drop that idea, as I have had times when it was really dark where the cluster dimmer set on full blast didnt feel good.... Seeing some of the pics on this sight has me really warming up to the cool blue idea  ..and I have some blue panels that are not that bright at all.

There is a wide selection for the panels on amazon.com (e.g. vendor : Zone Tech).

I cant think of a downside but I know that means I dont know all the issues. Only concern I can see is that I would draw too much current through that cluster board. I need to count my mAs and compare to the present bulb.

Here's some, same style, just black and cheaper.

Here's some that look pretty identical but a dollar cheaper.
