Posted this on the OS (glad I switched) but just incase noone saw it. 30ft travel trailer 4700lbs I only had to tow it once, because we set it on our property in northern Michigan. towed like a deam at 60-65 mph just had to get a weight distribution hitch (which I am selling now lol) and I installed a nice prodigy brake controller I got for free from work. GM makes it so easy to wire up in a TB. The rest of the time we tow our 8ft trailer that used to be a popup camper that we converted to a hauling trailer that we carry our 2 quads and other supplys up north. I will post pics of that next time we load them up for the trip.

My favorite toy to tow. A 1999 Nitro 185 Sport Fish-n-Ski. It is also blue. Unfortunately, these pics were taken before I topped her off with fuel for the winter.. :frown:

Here's my 4x8 utility trailer. She's old but in good shape. Also has tilt for loading quad or sled. Picked this up for $100! The guy threw in a 2.5" drop and ball (wasn't enough for the Envoy but got it anyway), two new spare wheels & tires, and a full lighting and wiring kit in a bag. I was super excited with my find  I wacked half a gallon of Tremclad on it and wired it up. Also bought an adjustable 6.5"rise to 7.5"drop hitch to try and level it. "To the dump to the dump to the dump dump dump!"

Newfie, I'd love to find a deal like that! Having sold my pickup to get the TB, I miss having a bed to throw stuff into. I "need" a little trailer like that. I'll probably end up getting a 4'x8' 1200# utility trailer from Harbor Freight and call it good.

Yep, it's pretty handy to have a trailer like that. Mine is 5x8 and it gets good use. I never have to worry about jamming stuff in or putting dirty stuff in the back of the Envoy. That deal NewfieEnvoy got is amazing, it was pretty much a gift, a lil elbow grease and it's looking new, nice! Keep looking and I'm sure you'll find a good deal too...

One thing to keep in mind. If you can find one on craigslist or somewhere that has normal size tires, I highly recommend going that way. My 6x8 utility trailer has 15" truck tires and tows beautifully. My camper has 12" tires and bounces all over the place. Usually when I arrive after pulling a trailer with little tires I'm ready to kill someone. Just a thought

No kidding. Sometimes the trailer just needs to be "broken" for a while.

Tell me about it! I use to run deliveries for a friend with his Chev2500 and a 37ft gooseneck flatbed and that easier to handle then this little guy. It's so small I can barely see it behind me, so backing up it will jack knife before you see what way its headed. Plus it has the smallest 8" tires so going down the road empty its air born on every bump

LOL Might park it with the wheels removed. "I'd give ya a hand but look at the trailer, shes in pieces"

Road Atlanta trip I just returned from. 2004 RX-8 riding piggyback on a Dively 19' Econotrailer, total weight around 4300 lbs.

1628 miles, 105 gallons of gas.

Well worth the cost, since the -8 trashed the clutch throwout bearing 1/2 way through the track event, and I'd have been stranded far from home if I'd driven it solo there.

Need a straight 6 with the wimpy 3.42 rear end. Then you can get 20 on the highway not towing anything

P.S. a non-rigid cartop carrier eats into the mileage. We recently drove 400 miles with one up on the roof (made from coated canvas, constructed like a huge school backpack), and we got 17.5 MPG :ugh:

This is what I tow. I need to drive in 3rd gear going 50-55mph cause I have the 3.42 gears.

I get about 8-9 miles to the gallon towing it.

Captain, that's what my trailer wants to be when it grows up. That or a Hi-Lo (or similar).

Actually sold mine before my second daughter was born as it would have been very cramped with 4 of us in there. Just waiting for my baby to get older and we'll hunt up another trailer. In the meantime, we'll tent camp with the ginormous tent if all four of us go, or the mid-size if it's just me and my oldest daughter.

For that size trailer, the weight is not bad.

Yeah, these ultralights are foam/board sandwich floors which reduces the weight. Its probably close to 6000 fully loaded. The truck handles it well with the help of my Equalizer hitch. Need to keep it under a certain speed at all times. Lets just say I let semi's pass me. The truck is basically past its limit towing it. So I run synthetic everythin and double check tire pressures just to be as safe as can be. Wish I had a Tahoe with a 5.3. I plan on getting a Sierra 1500 in a couple years just for towing it.

We were towing it with my wifes late 2007 Chevy TB but turned it back in (leased). Gotta tell ya though the EXT and XL's extra long wheelbase make it much nicer to tow. Feels much more stable.

must not be more stable. my regular length tows my 1986 30' that weighs the same at 60-65 mph average and I still get 10mpg's I also have 3.42 gears and a 4.2 my main thing is I gotta watch it going down hill because it just keeps picking up speed lol

Yes it is more stable. I can tow 70 mph if I want but I like to be safe and use less gas.. You shouldnt tow over 50 mph with a full load. Did you know this?

Anyone knows that the longer the wheelbase the more comfortable the ride and more stable. Its a fact jack. You shouldnt make statements you cant back up. I had a 2007 Trailblazer and now the 2005 Envoy XL. Used both to pull the trailer. The EXT and XL's are better for towing by far.

wow touchy touchy someone forgot his weeties and coffee this morning. I was just making a statement and no the truck speed in Michigan where we both live is 65mph and I have been driving with trailers for years along with commercial vehicles. I usually drive at 60 and still have less capable trucks passing me I am not all over the road and as long as you have a proper brake controller and weight distribution hitch your length doesn't make a difference in towing capability aside from the I got better gas millage then you :wootwoot: anyway go get some coffee and chill bro.

and I got my "FACT JACK" I have a higher towing rating then you seeing as that your EXT weighs more

Look in the following chart to find the maximum trailer weight for your vehicle.

source must not be from the Michigan DOT ours minnium speed is 55MPH per their web site

Amends several sections of the Michigan Vehicle Code related to the setting and posting of speed limits. Increases most freeway truck speeds to 60 mph, increases minimum freeway speed to 55 mph, eliminates speed differential for school buses, eliminates definition of residence district, revises definition of business district, provides a formula for the setting of urban and suburban prima facie speed limits if no Traffic Control Order is in place.

It's calculated based on tire size and rotational speed of trailer tires + vehicle load and experience. You know what you guys do what you want. I have my reasons. Not gonna convince you guys. I go by professional advice from multiple sources. One source of info is from Uhaul for instance. They recommend a maximum of 45 mph when towing. I've seen many trucks with trailers passing me on the highway that end up in the ditch with both the hitch wrapped around the truck. Many of these are just popups. Am I cautious? Yes. Am I ignorant of trailer speed laws? No. Am I a defensive and good driver? Yes.

Uhaul only has that warning due to insurance. If you are inan accident above those speeds they try to prevent liability. It has nothing to do with safety.

Please share the calculation. I regularly tow 4 different trailers and would like to know my top speed.

Any other sources you could share...

You do not have to convince us, but if you know we all tow un-safely, please guide us to the knowledge that will allow us not to endanger a bus full of nuns.

I suggest you do the research yourself.

It's not going to matter what I put on this forum. There are just going to be a bunch of people that scoff and say they are better drivers and know better. Besides my research could be wrong. Right? What I originally meant was that I saw the 50 mph figure on a GM manual over 10 years ago. My subsequent research has verified that. And so I just always stuck with GM's suggestion. Also my experience and butt knows what a safe speed limit is. It can at times be reduced even further depending on any abnormal winds and grade. Many experts recommend 55 as the max towing speed. I guess I a am a little more conservative.

I do too. 2 year old. Full time job, couple part-time jobs and looking for another job, plus the wife works two jobs. So I am busy too. However, considering you stated that you did the research and talked to the experts, it would be far easier for you to help educate me that to have me start from scratch, since in my 16 years of towing I have gone the posted speed limit from 20-70 without knowing better.

We come to this forum to help each other, not drop statements and then not support them when someone asks for help.

I answer lift/offroad and other platform questions via here/text/phone calls multiple times a week, because I am part of this community and will share my knowledge and experience to help a fellow member.

Just pointing out what you typed.

I agree with this.

I as well have towed for many years and have never been told that a maximum speed limit of 50. Obviously if this is so near and dear to your heart you should have something to provide as evidence, proof, documentation, something to show us why 50 is a good speed. If there is none, and it's just your opinion...say so. You said that your information is coming from a GM manual from over 10 years ago??? GM manual for what rig?

All Hardtrailz was asking for is some clarification and you immediately shut down and said piss off....so yeah, WOW is right
