Lol, "The Shed", those are fighting words around my house! I say build a shed because you can build what you want from a small shed to keep lawnmower, bikes and stuff in or build it bigger kinda like a shed/shop with hydro and a place to work and hang out.
A few years back I had to replace my garden shed, 8x10 wood shed built outta scraps, unpainted particle board covering it, mismatched shingles, filled with water every spring, etc etc etc. It came with the house I didn't build it.
One day I had an opportunity to buy 2x6x8's for $1 each so I bought 100. Next day sat down and drew a plan for a shed. I had to get a permit because of the size 12x16. I ordered custom trusses as they come with certification for snow load and whatever else the City needed for the permit. My friend is a framer and he did all the wood construction in a day and a 1/2. It's post on piers, 4x4 pressure treated posts sitting on 4"x10" cement piers 48" in the ground and back filled, as per code here the posts are wrapped in poly so the frost heave will slide on the post instead of lifting it. The deck/floor is 2x8 beams on 16" centers, all spaces filled with thick blue Styrofoam insulation and then 3/4" pressure treated plywood covering that. Walls are 2x6 with R22 roxul insulation. All interior wood seams are caulked floor to ceiling and then poly over the walls and ceiling, all switches and receptacles have poly around them and then tuck taped to wall poly. It's airtight to the point that if all doors and windows are closed the exhaust fan sucks the plastic from the wall. I have 2 doors for attic storage as the attic floor is all plywood providing lots of storage space. I ran 30 amps to a sub panel in the shed and a tv cable too. I put 2 lights in the attic, a main ceiling light, a bench light, a dart board light and an outside light. Lots of receptacles on different circuits and an outside gfi plug as well. I also put a high flow variable speed exhaust fan in the ceiling since I smoke. The outside is plywood walls and the shed is wrapped twice with that ty vek cloth paper stuff and tuck taped on all seams. Vinyl siding over that, Aluminum soffit, fascia, eaves n down pipes.
Started with a $100 worth of 2x8's and now I'm close to $7500 spent and still need to finish the inside walls n ceiling...I will when the funds permit.
I do spend a lot of time in the shed, I have all the comforts I need out here, hydro, tv, beer fridge, stereo 4 speakers n PS1 sub, laptop/wifi, dart board. I heat in the winter with a propane convection heater to warm it up quick and maintain the heat with a 750/1500 w heater. It's kinda funny because my friends come to the shed looking for me before they go to the house. It's a bit of a sore spot with my wife because I do spend so much time out here...
Now I need to build a shed for the lawnmower n stuff...
