Is it me, or have road crews been using more salt than they did 10 years ago? This is a black-top parking lot and that's not snow...

Here in WV they use a buttload of salt at the slightest little dusting of snow, then act like they have to save the precious little that they have left when the bigger storms hit later in the winter, like now.

Happens here every year, and you'd think they'd learn - but they never do...

You'd think we were driving on the salt flats around here from the white clouds of salt dust kicked up by the cars :weird:

Yeah, and it doesn't wash off with wiper fluid very well. Someone was talking the hot rumor the other day that "Ohio had already gone through half their salt," like there is no possible way to get more or something.

In my area, state roads are great, town are crap, and some county are completely unusable.

It's kinda funny too, just mere centuries ago (relatively speaking) salt was highly valued, was the cause of the rise and fall of cities and empires, and even used to pay soldiers in lieu of actual money at one point.

Now we just dump that crap all over the place like it's nothing.

Indeed, this is where we get the saying that someone is "worth their salt."

For those of you with jobs, it is also where the term "salary" comes from, in that it is derived from Roman soldiers being paid in salt instead of money.

Just my :twocents: on some salt history...

While salt is more necessary on the highways, most of the time I'd rather they just use sand. Especially when its cold, they throw salt everywhere, and it does nothing in the extreme cold. Where i grew up in Western NY we got tons of snow and they used alot of sand. Bonus...in the spring, run a street sweeper and the sand is gone, rather than 10 feet of your front lawn being dead from all the salt.

Salt budgets are based on history....so if you want to buy 400 tons next year you better be able to show that you used 400 tons this year. They have been on a saltathon here in WNY this year, my Denali has been hiding in the barn and I have to keep finding new reasons why we have to use the wife's suv..

Waste based not need based. Soooo stupid and one of the eleventy million reasons the government burns so much money and has so many budget issues. Then they have the audacity to demand more tax dollars from us :hissyfit:

Well if this is true that means you're saying they're purposely over dumping salt because otherwise they will get their budget cut next year and not have enough if it's a really bad winter that year. So it's kind of the method they are using for determining their budget that is so screwy, but from what I understand this type of budgeting is how a lot of government budgeting is done so there are many analogues in other government operations.

Congress: We spent more money on houses and hookers this year, so we're going to need to do another cost-of-living increase.

Yeah, sounds about right.

I worked for the city once, come December we went on a spending spree (my department, not my specifically). We bought all new computers, monitors, desks all so our budget wouldn't be decreased the next year. It's crap and the wrong way to do it, but budgets are based on "need" (in quotes because it's not really a need) and if you don't use it, you don't need it.

Spending is spending when it comes to budgets. Military was no different than city/state other than our budget ran on fiscal year and not calendar year.

August and September were huge spending months to make sure every cent was spent. Our Battalion budget was only $178,000 the last year I was in, but that had to cover training evolutions, fuel, transportation, ammo, parts for breakdowns/PMs, chow, water, etc. It was not too difficult to spend that money in no time.

If you have ever been in a position to ask for more money; allowance, a raise, a sale, fundraising, lobbying, tax revenue, aid relief etc. you ALWAYS ask for more money. Especially when it is not "yours". (Quotes is up for interpretation)

And we always find a way to spend it. Because it's not your's right?

That's probably a sign for the city or who ever does the garbage collecting.

Was it inside or out? Probably the same guy who reminds everyone their mom doesn't work there to clean up after them. Maybe the morning crew made it for the night crew?

I've played a few pranks on some lazy coworkers involving the trash.
