Hey all -

While in the middle of doing some maintenance, I decided I needed to reuild calipers, went off in search of rebuild kits (none available locally) and ended up getting wayyy sidetracked. I started thinking about replacing the calipers entirely, with something that had better appearance, & THAT led me to look into caliper covers, and that led me to MGP

Contacted them to see about having mockups done with my custom graphics, and understandably they're reluctant to put time into that without my order - so I did my own, wondered what people thought. How about some feedback on these:

Much appreciated

Not my style. I'd rather remove, clean, and paint the calipers, rather than to throw a cover over them. But that's just my 2₵

If you like them though, by all means...

Sorry, maybe I didn't state it very well, I wasn't mainly asking for opinions on the pros & cons of covers, just for feedback on the appearance of the graphics. FWIW, I had initially thought that getting painted or powder coated ones would be my preference too but when I looked into it, prices of those vs $20 to rebuild each and put the covers on has a lot of merit. (not to mention some apparent benefits of covers vs paint/powder - wouldn't mind hearing from people who have gone the cover route to see what their experience has been)

I definetly like the graphics. I dont know much about the caliper covers, I like the idea but would have to see one installed on a caliper.

Nice work on the graphics

I like the graphics, but I'm not a fan of the carbon fiber look I think it cheapens the idea. I'd prefer just gloss black. Since your just looking for opinions of the graphics than maybe that's not the point here.

SHABLAM!!! Caliper rebuild kit

I know you said locally but I assume an Advance is nearby. I would get them now before they go the way of the do-do-bird, alot of rebuild kits have.

Not sure about the graphics....they look really cool don't get me wrong, but that's alot going on for the calipers.

I have been thinking about painting mine black but would need to smooth the surface some. I have seen many painted caliers and gloss black loks real nice when the surface is smooooth.

I don't think Advance is in Canada?? I'm almost 100% I've never seen one at least and their store locator doesn't even let you put in a Canadian postal code. When I said available locally, yeah I was referring to brick and mortar places.

Someone in my other maintenance thread supplied a link or reference to a rebuild kit, but when I went there I couldn't find them. The search there is what got me sidetracked in the first place - I was scared to follow yours for fear of what else I may find to spend money on!! I did look at painted, watched a few vids, wasn't overly impressed (was a smoothness issue as you say) and had concern about down time - I literally don't ever have even a half day of down time before I need it ready to roll again.

And I tend to agree about how busy they look - if there's one thing I'm NOT, it's a graphic artist. I can do all kinds of wild and crazy stuff with Photoshop, but that doesn't mean I should. In fact, your answer is what I expected to see more often. And because MGP also gave me a bit of feedback, I think I'll try a 2nd iteration, with hopefully a bit less cheesy look to it.

Thanx all

I know they make high temperature resistant vinyl, for caliper decals and such. Maybe see if Harmless can get his hands on some to make the graphics for you, paint your calipers gloss black, then slap them on there. Easy peasy.

I guess the decal route might offer the chance to try it out and see how it really looks and be easily removed if I decide I don't like it after all. But the painted examples I saw still looked rough, and it makes me wonder how well the decals would adhere even if I can find the time to get them off and do a perfect cleanup & paint job. And the calipers themselves have a pretty irregular surface area, seems like I'd be even further limited in my size and placement options - the covers at least are a single flat surface that covers the whole caliper area

You know what......I failed to look at your location. My bad.

I think your design has alot of creativity, I wonder what a gloss black with just a GMC logo in the center would look like. Stretch out the letters slightly and use silver or light gray as the color for the GMC logo.

Like the red Cadillac cover but the way I described. The gray would match the aluminum parts.

No worries, thx for trying anyway. And your suggestion is sorta the direction I was heading with the next version(s), I'll prob have those knocked off by Mon or Tue - check back then to see. Off the top of my head, MGP seems to have licensed the bowtie logo, but a quick search didn't turn up any GMC - wonder if they would have any issues replicating it without a license.

I managed to locate some examples in gloss and flat black (also called stealth). The stealth versions had just a simple logo embossed into the surface, without any color. I leaned in the direction of the gloss black, with the CNC machined custom graphics, got rid of the carbon fiber and toned down the cheesy overloaded view...I definitely like rev2 better. And because of time issues, as well as drawbacks to paint, as well as awkward surface area for decals applied to paint, I'm pretty sure I'm going to go with the covers, pretty close to this:
