Just picked this up, has 96k on it. I would like to change out all the fluids so I know what's in there. I do not have the manual so I'm hoping for some help. What should I be using for the following

Type of

Oil
Both front and rear differential
Plugs
ATF fluid

I-6 engine
Vortex 4200

Anything else I should replace? I like to do preventive maintenance on my vehicles.

Thanks

Manual is available on this site.

Oil: I have 174K miles with no issues using the cheapest dino oil I can find

Diffs: Mobil 1 75-90

Plugs: ONLY USE THE AC DELCO ones

ATF: Dextron VI

The most overlooked is the Auto-Trac II fluid in the transfer case that should be done every 50K

Check wheels bearing, tie rods, sway bar links.

Just did a similar maintenance sweep on my Yukon Denali. GM trucks love OEM spark plugs so stick with them. I agree with Hardtrailz on the Mobil 1 gear oil. The GMT360's require Auto-trak 2 fluid which Amazon does sell for a little over $7 per quart. I think you'll need 2 qts. Dealers are more for sure.

I can suggest a coolant flush and fill with dex-cool as the fluid has a life span of 5 years/100,000 miles.

Auto-trak II is available at some regular parts stores as well.

Welcome to the Nation!

Do follow the above recommendations. The link to the manuals is in my signature.

Test the operation of the electro-viscous fan clutch to be sure you won't have cooling or A/C problems later.

How to test the electro-viscous fan clutch

Thanks guys!!!

I read I should use Dex VI for my transfer case. Is this a bud light - bud debate of is Auto Trac II the way to go?

I plan on hiring someone to flush my coolant. That gets messy.

DO NOT USE Dex in our TC.

It requires the Auto-Trac

Welcome to the Nation!

Where did you read Dex VI for the T'case?

It gets Auto Track II from a different fill plug than the trans.

Oh yeah, on the diff's and transfer case, always remove the fill plug before removing the drain plug. It will be a bad day if you drain them and can't fill them due to the fill plug being frozen.

Good luck!

New trucks and many other platforms use tranny fluid in TC, but not the 360-370 platform

I googled 07 chevy TC and read it on a old post. I also saw a you tube vid and he said to use tranny fluid. Someone did mention the auto trac and they went back and forth. The individual said its right in the manual to use Dex in the TC case.

I doubt that very much unless it's for another type of truck. Follow what it says in YOUR manual.

As said before but use only AC Delco plugs. Some say that Denso makes them, regardless the AC were the easiest to find. Use only AT2 fluid in the TC. Some talk about an alternative but I paid 7$ a liter at the dealer. If there was an alternative it would have to beat that price.

Engine oil: My oil life monitor gongs after 16000km or 10000 miles. It has no idea what I run so run whats cheapest that will work for your climate. I personally run synthetic and am going to stretch my oil changes out to 20,000km. I run it easy and do a lot of highway miles. I also use one oil year round to work in our moderate summer heat and extreme bloody cold winter. if cold flow properties do not matter just run some cheap conventional. I use Pennzoil Platinum 5w30 with a Fram Ultra filter.

As for the diffs: They spec synthetic from the manual. 75w90 GL5 front and back. No additives required if you have the G80 locker but would require some limited slip additive if you have a limited slip as in the SS model. I do not see how synthetic is required but I personally use it. it has better cold and hot properties and according to Eaton, gears run cooler and seals last longer. I run Amsoil 75w90 as it meets the GL5, was relatively inexpensive (15$ a quart) and has a really low pour point.

I have a Hastings transmission filter and the tranny had a fluid exchange with Amsoil low viscosity ATF. Why: It again has great cold flow properties and I got it for free.

Regardless, run whats cheap. You don't need the best high dollar fluids to keep this thing alive and happy.

Thanks again...ordered my AT II from Summit last night, 2 quarts.

I'll tackle all this on my day off next week.

Question...when I change out the rear diff. do I need to replace the gasket? Can I just crack it open and let it drain?

I never use gaskets. Not sure if there is one stock. I pull the cover and clean off both sealing surfaces and inspect gears and internals as well as cleaning them up a bit. Also clean off the magnet. Then i just use RTV to seal the cover back on and refill.

If it still has the original rubber gasket, you can reuse it. I did on my replacement '08 differential which still had the gasket, no leaks.

I had my diff cover off 3 years ago when I changed the gear oil. I wiped it all down and re-used it. Not so much as weeping at this point. If it was to get damaged or leak then I would RTV it. Nothing wrong with that.

Great site and thanks again...

On a different note while poking around I noticed I could wiggle the cooling fan. Is that normal for these trucks? My Fords never moved, solid as a rock.

Definitely not normal. Water pump time. Or fan clutch. Is it the fan by itself? Or the pulley and all?
Take off your belt and check to see what's loose. Water pump is pretty easy on these.

Welcome!

Suggest taking tech talk to a tech thread, makes it easier to keep track of for everyone and helps out others who may come along later with the same issue

If you do get a new one, get a Hayden. It's the preferred brand here. Stay away from Dorman. Sure they have a lifetime warranty but who wants to replace it every 6 months?
