Rooting does not void my warrenty! Jailbreaking does, if the store knows about it.

Rooting your phone VOIDS your warranty. This has been upheld in court. While you legally root/jailbreak your phone, the carriers are not required to support the phone after. And they dont.

Am I really the only one here who has a decent iphone? Mine's jailbroken which is the way it NEEDS to be, as is all my iOS devices (itouch & ipad2) and would NEVER own a crapple product unless it was jailbroken. That way, I get the best design out there (IMHO), one of the fastest, AND I can install all those apps that you guys have on your Android.

I own an iPad2 and it's not jailbroken. Not because I'm against it, but because I use it for a specific set of tasks and none of those require it to be jailbroken. Now, my Android phone has been rooted because I do need it to do more than Verizon would would allow.

The fact is, this needs to be open-source. People like freedom.

Wrong, people like the illusion of freedom, not real freedom. People prefer being behind walled gardens. And when I say people, I mean most of the world, not people like you or me.

Well his there all a "piece of junk" comment wasnt any better...but thats done and moving on now.

If I get the money ill prob go pick up a s3 and play around with it and see how it runs. Still going for the iphone 5 but for now till then ill play around with a s3 if I get it

Didn't mean for my comment to turn into a riot. I just don't think it is that great, if it wasn't for all the celebrities buying them I don't think it would be as popular as it is today.

Hey Roadie. I got mine on the 27th ...
I've been reading the Sprint forums to get a hint about their deliveries. Verizon would probably still be holding theirs back if it wasn't for the multi-carrier launch. Ours are getting delivered Monday afternoon. Sigh.... At least I'll get it before I fly to Wisconsin for my brother's (3rd) wedding next weekend.

According to my carrier, it does not void the warrenty as long as the reason it is installed doesnt override the carriers intended purposes.. In other words, I dont turn the phone into a mobile hot spot without paying for it. And that was the only limitation that my carrier was worried about.

And thats all fine and dandy, just unroot the phone when repair is needed, and no one is the wiser.

One thing I liked the most about my Galaxy S1, it came with a free mobile hot spot that you did not need to pay for. Now I just use an app to add free tethering and wifi.

That is cool! Do you use redsnow also or a different kind of jailbreak? I am debating to jailbreak my 4 but I don't know if it can handle it with the older chip it has

I think the reason it is as popular now is because its not only with att but with verizon and sprint too. I am sure many wanted it but not the att service you know

After owning the Galaxy S1, and now the Galaxy S2... I used to be impressed with Samsung... Not so much after owning these 2 devices.

I'm joining this discussing a bit late but thought I might respond as I'm a current SGS2 owner. I purchased the AT&T variant last fall 2 weeks after it's release date. The novelty from all the hype was fun at first, but soon ended as the software wasn't on par with the hardware. Android's Gingerbread seemed flawed on the phone in many ways. But I finally had the opportunity to download the latest ICS ROM from the AOKP team. I've been running it on my S2 for a week now. As most know, hardware is a paperweight if not mated to functional, desirable software. ICS has most definitely brought back my confidence in the open source platform. Responsive, intuitive, and clean. That's my new take on the Galaxy phone. It just needed some maturation in it's Google partners software product.

As far as Apple, a recent statistic I read regarding the loyalty base sums it up. When current iPhone users were asked if their next phone would be an iPhone, overwhelmingly 91% of the participants said YES. Now, someone argue with me that Apple stock isn't worth its current $600 per share price, or even a $1000/share. When you have amount of desirability in a product, your competition doesn't matter. They've set the standard; they've nurtured the community; more importantly, they have future buy-in from 9-out-of-10 customers. And we all know...Apple has a shit load of customers.

But I digress, my rooted, open-source, ICS-based SGS2 runs circles around that bitch "Siri".

Yeah siri is okay it is nice to have and play with, but now IOS6 will be out in the fall time with an improved Siri (after all it is a new program so that could be why it wasn't perfect to start with). I am personally very excited to get turn by turn nav with the new IOS6 because honestly that was the one thing I missed about an android was having a free nav.

For anyone that would want to read up on it

As an early adopter of Betamax, like most of my engineering friends, we were dismayed when the technically inferior VHS took over the world. Sigh...... :frown:

At least when we flocked to CDs and abandoned vinyl, THAT standard stuck around for a while. My boss bought one of the first Sony CD players out of Japan in 1982 for around $900 and we all went to his condo and fell in love with it. He had a great audio system for the time, and had to call his upstairs and downstairs neighbors to see if they were home before he would play 1812 Overture at full blast. Google maps/nav/Earth is free on my android. And you can cache the road maps for off-line (no signal) use.

No its all free on iPhone also I have google maps and gives me directions but does not do turn by turn telling me take left in this may feet etc. The android has that included in there google maps which I liked because if I need directions I just look it up and then it told me how to get there. iPhone I just have to look where my next turn is because it doesnt tell me its coming.

Also looks like apple is walking away from google over all because that IOS6 turn by turn maps is there own ones and has 3d maps etc. Its pretty cool actually, also gives you traffic updates etc. Hopefully that all runs smooth and well when it comes out

And this is undesirable why? If it tells you the street name or exit number, just keep your eyes peeled for that street or exit. This sounds strangely similar to the folks who want "step by step pictorial directions" for a repair job because they say they're "visual learners" and can't follow a list of textual directions. I suppose another generational gap issue. :undecided:

When I say look for what my next turn is as in look to see on my phone what the next turn is lol not on the road, that is not a problem! At least if it says hey take a left in this many feet to this road then hey its coming and I know the road etc. Maybe its just me that likes a turn by turn...anything that makes driving easier and less dangerous by it talking to me telling me where to go.

All I know is my next car will have a nav system from stock...no aftermarket dash and stuff

Then I played with a few different themes on Winterboard. I'm debating giving up my jailbreak and seeing if I can get a hold of the Beta Version of iOS6

Didn't you get the news Roadie? Textbooks are passe. Due to financial restraints, school districts across the country have integrated passive YouTube technologies into their grade school curriculums. Who needs to read about it when you can watch a video snippet on your tablet PC.

I NEVER, EVER had 8-tracks in the house, but I *did* have a Craig player in my car at the time in 1973. Favorite tapes: Beach Boys for the first warm days of springtime, and Carpenters for making out with Mrs. Roadie

My 22 month old uses a laptop to watch his "alphabet train" (and such) educational videos. He emulates dad with his clumsy fingers in a chaotic, qwerty-style fashion . To much of my disapproval with passive learning techniques, I find at least he's getting tactile experience with some reactive behaviors. Interfacing with an iPad seems too benign for his growth. Plus, he can show off his new found skills in pre-school without looking like he's been suckling on mommy's breast throughout his toddler years. Good luck all you iPad users!

Your Android one is HTC Sense 2.1 (or 2.3, can't remember which offhand). There are also Samsung's Touchwiz and Motorola's Blur skins.

But... With no rooting/jailbreak required (these were the free versions)...

Thats what is on my Wifes Nokia Nuron. Probly the best Bar phone to own. Free, non-internet based, navigation system. The phone can be used solely without internet. It syncs better to the Microsoft Sync in the Fords better than any droid I have ever used.

Yah. Still love it. Indispensable. Seidio is shipping their enhanced batteries in 3 days and I'm on the waiting list for that so I can get a solid 18 hours out of it if I need to. Now I start to get battery anxiety around 8-10 hours and have to plug it in somewhere. I should post my list soon of my favorite apps. "Our Groceries" is a shared to-do list app my wife and I save a LOT of phone calls and texts by using.

I just got an S3 after coming from an iPhone4 and I love it. What I hated the most about Apple is their belief in protecting us from ourselves by preventing this or that. Case in point, no torque app. Why? Because Apple won't allow serial connections over Bluetooth. Or I couldn't find an an app to allow me to close Bluetooth in one touch. Apple allows Bluetooth to be turned on by apps but not off. I shouldn't have to jailbreak .my phone to be be able to do what I want to do. And so far all my old apps are better on Android, including Tapatalk and Teamviewer. And the ability to add more storage and swap my battery is a bonus. I also needed a larger screen, was going blind on that tiny iPhone.

Yeah my mom is going to get my iPhone 4 and I will prob pick up the s3 till the new iPhone comes out and see how I like it myself. Seems like lots of good reviews are out for it. So over all is it smooth and not laggy? Battery pretty good? Also what is the torque app?

Iphone5 is STILL going to have no memory slot and removable battery, unless the rumors are false.

S3 has the video horsepower to play videos/movies/FLASH content in a small sub-window WHILE doing something else in the rest of the 4.8" (!) display.

Battery life can suck using 4G a lot. WiFi is less current drain. I'm going for the larger battery even if it makes the phone fatter. I can handle a thicker phone. Mrs. Roadie likes it thin.

Torque is THE OBDII app to die for. Torque — OBD2 Performance and Diagnostics for your Vehicle and various threads here and on other enthusiast forums.

I don't care to being able to change the battery for the memory, it hasn't bugged me in the past time I had mine and wont later on. The memory thing doesn't bother me either because I only put so much on there

I was planning on going to the S3, as well as switching to Verizon (I get employee pricing there). However, that has come to a screeching hault, as Verizon has LOCKED the bootable screen so that you cant put a custom rom on it. I hate that, I want to get rid of bloatware, and be able to use my WIFI without having to pay extra for it.

Brian,

From what I've read ICS will enable you to at least freeze the bloatware if not delete it altogether.

In regards to paying for WIFI...what do you mean? For tethering, I use PDAnet...just download the app and you get internet anywhere for up to 5 devices for free.

If you're referring to having to pay to get WIFI, please enlighten me, as my wife uses WIFI instead of using 4G a lot.

Verizon tried to thwart the use of PDANet starting a couple of years ago for cable tethering. I couldn't keep a connection up. Then FoxFi came out and whatever they did worked again. Then PDANet bought or merged with FoxFi and the combination works just fine again.

THEN Verizon got slapped with an FCC fine and had to allow WiFi apps back into the app store and quit charging their extortionist $20/mo for using a 4G phone as a WiFi hot spot due to a commitment they made (then conveniently forgot) when they bought the 4G spectrum.

Mobile hotspots for all: Verizon settles with FCC for $1.25M, must allow tethering apps | VentureBeat

There are, as always, footnotes.

Well now with the share everything plan that Verizon came out with they include mobile hot spot. Pretty cool but sucks since they limit the data usage now.

I stated it wrong, not WIFI, But Hotpsot..

And Roadie, dont let them fool you with that. I am also grandfathered on 2 lines for a unlimited data. Amazingly enough, my data seems to stop at 5gig. I have contacted my carrier about it, and they simply say that they know I have it, and their isnt anything they can do about it.
