LED Mod Thread

Yeahhh definitely not gonna try opening these then lol.

Dang it. So do I give give it a whirl taking my current ones apart and hope they open OK, or order yet another set of lights and try to return these :undecided: I want to get these lights redone before June 6.

*edit* Hey PapaBear you wanna buy some lights :rotfl:

The route I was taking was buying a set of used OEM lights. After talks with Carlton (and after trial and error of destroying the used lights I bought lol) I just ended up cracking open my original ones on my truck. For some reason the OEM ones are easy to dremel open and cut through the adhesive. But I don't know if thst would help you since you have your modded lights already

Haha nahh, im just gonna pop open my stocks and paint them black and seal them back up.

Just did the one led in my memory switch and even when I lit the original bulb it seemed pretty dull anyone else done one of these? Is that normal?

How did you do your memory switch? Are you talking about the one in the DDM?

I don't have those on mine, got pics of your process?

 You shoulda took pics anyway!! Such a nooblet!

Really need more info though, what kinda LEDs did you use, what are the specs on em? What size resistors? Did you wire up more than 1 together? If so, in series or parallel?

So it looks like you have 1 LED in the middle of 4 buttons, and the light isn't shining directly on any of the translucent parts of the button faces. Since the strawhats usually have about a 90 degree beam, you're not getting much light to the sides, which is where you need it. This is the same complication with the door modules, which is why most of us opt to put 1 LED under each button.

If I had the memory buttons, I would go with 2 LEDs at least, try to angle them as close to horizontal as I could, as it appears each button has a diffuser built into it. That's where you need your light the most, not shining at the back of a dark bezel. :twocents:

Actually since I took it back apart for the pics I re adjusted the led and it looks much better now thats what the last pic is so I think it was just off center the first time[emoji2]

The golden rule of posting things as this... Pics or it didn't happen....

Time for the 4wd switch matt said I shouldn't need resistors for the indicating just wanted to double check if anyone has done these
Post #54 in this thread :book:

Had a couple slip ups first when I was testing my leds I popped a contact so I had to run an extra wire but before I had one light out I slipped and put the soldering iron into my finger deep good thing it burned it shut lol next is my garage door openers

I think we all have one of those types of burn experiences. Sucks like hell too!! Those modules are pretty easy, you already know how to make the LED short with the resistor out to the side, so that one should be a piece of cake for you. The sunroof, and cargo glass switches, for those that have them, THOSE are a royal pain to get right.

They are much easier if you have a test bench and a wiring diagram to know what pins do what. But at the time, I didn't, so I had to reassemble the overhead console (mostly) and go out to the truck every time I wanted to see the output, which also sucks if you live in an apartment and have to go out to a parking lot. :ugh:

Well overhead is done twice since I switched polarity the first time boy was I mad and I dropped the torx screw and it fell under the carpet so luckily I have some screws from other trucks that fit perfect

That's funny, I did the same thing, by losing one of those torx screws. Took out the other one after finding some Philips head screws that fit it the same. Much easier getting that thing down later.

Ya it seems all the screws that hold the panels and speakers are the same thread pitch so they go right in which was a relief

All this talk of lighting up switches has mad me HATE the ones that i have that don't work right. So if your going to fix it why not make it better! I had 3mm leds in there and since it was one of my first soldering projects i toasted some of the contacts and they wouldn't light up. But even the ones that did weren't enough light for me so this time i used some strategically places strip lighting i had and i think it turned great!

Just a shame the red half of the temp dials don't really work with blue light, lol. Maybe get some reds to put in behind there?

Looks like he still has just the single LED in that spot. Swapping to a white one would solve that issue.

That's true. I didn't think about putting a white led in that spot. It has always bugged me that the red didn't show.

Since my rear window switches dont have lights im stealing the ones off the other truck but I dont have a illumination power wire buy im sure there is another one for power that I can splice. Does anyone know the colored wire I need to power it?

You really need to get the wiring diagrams and get yourself acquainted with them. All the info you need is in them. :book:

I know but I was just hoping someone else has done it cause they are done now and I was just hoping to splice it in somewhere
