Here's the problem, " GM co-developed the 10-speed automatic with Ford Motor Company "

Actually, Ford's has a few less issues than GM's even though it's basically the same tranny. GM cheaped out on the manufacturing. It was developed by ZF and Ford/GM bastardized it.

The sad truth is that people who like/prefer to work on their vehicles are a dying breed.

Today's cars are designed for neither longevity nor DIY maintenance specifically because these are no longer considered valuable attributes in the eyes of the car-buying public.

The automotive industry has shifted from a hardware as product business model to a service/finance oriented business model.

In terms of profit & loss, the money is now in the financing & servicing side of the game. The actual vehicle is now seen as cost-of-sales (i.e. an expense). In that model, quality & reliability are unjustifiable cost adders.

This is the same hardware-as-cost-of-sales evolution that occurred in the PC & cellphone worlds; the money comes from the subscription. The hardware is throwaway and the marketing is constantly driving upgrades to the newest model.

Rant complete . . . maybe not.

My PC is 14 years old and my cellphone (Samsung S5, chosen & retained because the battery is replaceable) is 11 years old. Both work just fine.

Now the rant is complete.

And on top of that, they give maintenance schedules (oil and fluid changes) that don't optimize longevity. Why would they? They don't want our vehicles to last forever, not needing replacement. My Sierra I have been changing my oil at 8k km (5k miles) and the 10 speed tranny's fluid at 50k km (~31k miles) to give it a fighting chance to live. From what I've been reading, most of the 10 speed valve body failures have been with the 6.6L Duramax crowd.

I'm just waiting for the powertrain warranty to run out before I replace mine with the latest updated one, which is a lot cheaper than the one being offered by Next Gen. However, I have an extended warranty for the valve body by GM but I'd have to get a failure/code before they would do it free.
