Being in rust free California helps a lot. Although it's probably commonplace to see old iron there, here it's rare to see anything prior to 2000 on the road unless it's a no-winter collector vehicle.

Although not mentioned, it has likely had the tranny rebuilt at least once or twice, the engine maybe once as at that least the rings would have been worn and burning oil. Even if the tranny is a 4L80E, it still has to shift and wear the clutches.
