So my Saab 9-7x 5.3 AWD had this issue before I deleted the AWD. While in Drive foot on brake at a full stop I get the occasional clunk with a very slight forward surge. This also happened once with foot on brake stopped in neutral. In park at idle I’ll get out and step to left rear door and can hear a very slight grinding. So as the title says, rear diff or trans??

Hate to say it but could be either. If the driveshaft moves a fair bit between R and D, I'd say the diff gears are worn.

Alright thanks for the reply , I’m taking it to a trans shop this morning and hope they’ll be able to tell me. I’m good at remove replace but diagnosing is my weakness.
