throttle control for under the hood work

Maybe a dumb question, I googled it but came up empty handed. In former days with carburetors and/or mechanical linkage it was easy to manually control engine speed while tinkering under the hood. Now with drive by wire it's not possible any more and I can't find any info on a way to do that. Is it possible, maybe with some electronic attachment?

Yes, engine speed can be controlled bi-directionally using a Tech 2 or an advanced scan tool. That said, I have had poor results using my VCX Nano and Tech 2 S/W running on my laptop; the RPM's hold for 5-10 seconds then drop back down to idle.

I have also had success with a bottle of beer . . . give it to my buddy while he manages the gas pedal.

I recently bought a cheap Chinese bidirectional scanner (xTool A30M), I'll have to look into that but I have my doubts.

DBW is frustrating. I have a 2024 Lauch cReader Elite for GM vehicles. It takes a few minutes to connect and get to the commanded idle controls, but it works.

you can still get this version of the cReader on eBay for about $100.

It is very likely the PCM has built in programming designed to shunt ANY possible Engine Runaway married to its Reduced Power Algorithm as the calculus involving The Throttle Position, The MAF Sensor, and The ACC Pedal Dual Inputs while it attempts to determine "The Driver's Intent" and avoid having any possible Runaway Vehicle Disaster from occurring.
