Source For Replacement Center Console Storage Lid?

Hi,

Didn't notice this until the weather warmed up a bit and the vinyl softened, but the lid of the storage compartment in my new-to-me 2007 TrailBlazer has a big old "soft spot" in the middle of it. It's as if it has an internal plastic shell and somebody caved it in. It looks ok, but you can definitely feel the soft spot if you apply any pressure to it at all. I'm wondering what might be the best source for a replacement?

Thanks,
Jim

Junkyards or fleabay. You could take it apart and see if you can fix it yourself. maybe some JB weld would do the trick?

It may be hard finding something that matches right. I'd try looking for a new one online, when I find one in the yard, it is usually weathered a bit. First thought I had when looking at mine after reading this was, I'd take a black light to the inside of front...

My console lid had the same problem. I removed it and took the two pieces apart -as seen in the post mentioned above. I then sprayed Great Stuff under the cracked/broken pieces of the plastic (under the console lid), then reassembled and let it dry for 24 hours.

Not only is the lid is perfect again, the Great Stuff is very durable and doesn't crack or break when a slight amount of weight is put on it. It also has some "give" in it, to allow for a bit of cushion. Win-win for me

Thanks for all the feedback, guys!

I figured if a complete replacement could be had inexpensively, I'd just do that. $156 isn't "inexpensively," in my book. (My Lord: The prices on fleaBay are even higher than that!)

Okay, I'll take it apart tonight an see if fixing it seems possible. Thing is: From the feel of it, I suspect it's busted-up inside a whole lot more than Ryda55555's. We'll see.

Good luck, and you could always use silicone or PL to permanently stick a piece of metal there

So I'm thinkin' "Hmmm... dunno what I have at home to address this, but I know we got tons of materials and glues here at work." So I ask the facilities guy if he wants to help me with a non-work-related project.

A couple hours later he brings it to me, fixed

I think he said he used an acrylic adhesive to mend the cracks/breaks in the plastic. He said it appeared to have "welded" them back together nicely. Then he filled the space with blocks of stiff, closed-cell foam material. There were also some broken-off/missing posts in there, for which he fabricated replacements.

Glad you fixed it without forking out unnecessary money  hope you at least bought the guy a coffee and a sandwich though, sounds like he went out of his way to make it good as new :raspberry:

I got one off Craigslist for 25 bucks a couple years ago. I had to wait awhile, but I would not pay 100 either.

Mine was busted up too. There were also some missing pieces under there, which led me to believe that the previous owner had their paws in there trying to fix it a one time or other.

Anyhow, the "Great Stuff" filled in all of the missing area's AND supported the cracks to where I shouldn't have to worry about them again. The foam container was only $5 too, so it was a cheap, easy, and sturdy fix.

I need to fix the one in my 02, lucky for me I have a few cans of spray foam (and a few projects around the house to use the rest of the can on!).

Ill pull it apart and fix it on the 15/16th, thanks for the tips fellas.

Now back to tuning...

your best bet is to try to fix it first. the boken part that you see in Ryda's post is under the inside
cover of the lid.
the part number , for grey, is 25998847 and GM Parts Direct: Your direct source for Genuine GM Parts price is 155.91
black (ebony) is 105.67 and cashmere is 120.70. those prices include the latch and hinge.

Are those part numbers for the standard ones or the leather wrapped ones? $156 is a bit steep for the same POS that will crack again!

If I was going to replace it, first thing I'd do, upon receiving it, would be to take it apart and pack the empty space with something like the closed-cell foam used in mine, or that spray-in stuff a couple of the other members used. Then there'd be no cracking again.

I have been doing some research on this exact item thru work. It's a Kenworth dealership and we also handle GMC heavy duty. with that said i get GM parts for 10% above cost. I have been looking at getting just the insert for the center counsel lid but for what ever reason that's not a part according to GM. My problem is the little round peg and the front of the lid broke off beccuse i have a big dumb lumix for a nephue who does not seem to know that the center counsel is NOT for a grab handle to get his dumb ass in my truck. After a long butt chewing out about how he broke something in my truck and almost made him find his own ride home (75 miles away) i tried to use JB weld. it held for about 9 month's really well. but then it got hot and broke clean off. now it will not fit back in and im stuck with a lid that wont stay closed. I can get the lid thru work for $110.00 (my cost) but damn that's alot of money for a .99 cent part that seems to be broke. so my idea is to maybe try to drill out the JB weld and get a screw to go into it and hold it on from the inside with a washer. Is this stupid or a good idea? someone please let me know your thoughts on it.

Hey, if it saves you $110 its not a stupid idea at all  i know a lot of people just JB weld a bolt there but if you can figure out a way to get it to look factory then by all means go to town lol
Plus if you dont end up fixing it ( which you probably will) then at least you could say you tried first:thumbsup:

So i did my idea and took the lid apart. drilled out the JB weld that was in the peg that holds the lid in place and put a screw in there with a 1/4 in washer to stop it from pulling thru the hole. I also put alittle bit of JB weld back in the hole i drilled out to make sure the screw holds in place. Put it all back together and close's right up and seems to be a better fix than my original one. If it does not work im not out anything due to the fact that i had everything i needed in my tool box's to get it done. And while i had it apart i did find a part number on it but it lead's to nothing on gm's part's list. I am to assume that it's specific to GM only. And since i cant seem to find my note while im writing this post i cant put up the P/N:. if i get the chance to take it appart again i will post that and see if any one else can have better luck finding this peice cheeper that the whole lid.

I did something similar with my 03....1/4' stainless steel bolt and nut, lock wasker and 2 washers (took apart the console lid and drilled out the remaining peg) Works great - better than it ever did before. You could always paint the screw / bolt black and no one would ever notice.

A Cheap fix just means you have money for more important things........
