Modding TB tail light boards for non-SRCK LEDs

MAY03LT said:
Thanks Matt! I don't think I will need them to finish yours. I know I have the polarities correct and that any non-SRCK will plug right in. I'm really just looking for a "good" pair for myself for testing any future boards that I might do, and to take some better comparison pics of dual-park-halogens and dual-park-LED boards.

So, on those spider-thingys, are there any dim/bright differences when looking at them as if they were mounted to a board?

No worries mate.

I can get spiders but not like the ones in the pic above with SMDs all over the sides too. The Cree bulbs are sooo much brighter, simpler and they are just starting to dabble with SRCK versions and switchbacks.

I have spiders in the reverse lights, more cause I like the look than need the brightness, but I think I'll be going with your Cree lights in my tails/brakes when I get around to those.

Now that Matt's boards are on their way to Ohio, it's time for another project.

I'm going to modify an Envoy board that will add dual brakes as well as accommodate non-SRCK LEDs. There already is a mod for dual brakes but as you guys know I'm not down with shove-a-wire mods. I'm excited to see how this will turn out!

So am I. Dual brakes and turns would be the cat's arse!:cool:

That's on the way as well:yes:

I wish I could find my Envoy boards. I did this mod already and would take a picture of them. (I'm currently running with Ascender Tails) I'm going to try and find some pictures that I took of them. Though.

EDIT: The Envoy boards are much easier to mod into non-SRCK and dual breaks/turns though.

Post them up! I don't think I've seen that mod posted here yet.

I got something else cooking.... Waiting on parts to show up.

Can't wait to see what you have planned:cool:

So there you have it, Trailblazer dual park boards for non-SRCK LEDs!:wootwoot:

Parts list:

2 Dorman TB boards p/n 923-009
1 Dorman Envoy board p/n 923-011
2 things of loctite epoxy
14g wire, solder, heat shrink

What did we learn from all this? Well, we know it's possible, we know the part numbers, and we also have a schematic!

is there a dummies version..im still beating my head on the wall..lmao

Do you want to build your own or do you want to buy a pair? I can help you with both.

Or 1 OEM Envoy board + your stockers (I hope!!!)

kardain i think is also building some that he has also offered to build a set... just not sure bout them..not that he is doing it just that some of the issues that come from it like relays and cruise control and such?.... and then u can or cant put some on front of vehicle at same time? i dont know..just confusing..probably making it harder than it is im sure...

When I'm done, I'll explain it in such a way that it is made clear.... don't worry

The hard part will be making this plug and play, but I'll cross that bridge later.

True that! You get yours up and running?

Yeah, I tried learning about this LED integration on Trailvoy and came out knowing less then when I went in lol. But I think I got a handle on this thanks to my man blckshdw.

Not yet, Sparky said he'll help me (AKA do it for me), but we're having a hard time getting free time at the same time.

Someone axed me if it would be possible to wire up a pair of dual park boards and make it so that non-SRCK LEDs could be used. If the sockets were rewired like the board on the right, would conventional (non-SRCK) 3157 LEDs work? I don't see why they wouldn't but to be sure I figured I'd ask the pros.

For less work I'm going to flip the middle socket on the modded board so all I have to add is the Parking light + and -. I'll also cut off the lower - tab on the top socket to make that the brake + and run a jumper from the top - to the old brake +.

I edited MAY03LT's image to show what I mean

You'll still have reorient turn + and ground on the middle socket. But your on point with the jumpers, that's how I did the OEM boards.

In this thread we only did dormans, for more on modding OEMs check this one out:

I got a board wired and the edit I did to MAY03LT's pic worked perfectly with non SRCK LEDs :wootwoot:

Now I get where you were going with the flip. Right on!!!!

That way you don't need to move as many connections.

So you got it figured and don't need me? Heh that's probably a good thing since my schedule has been so nuts.

Ya, I grew a pair and just did it. They didn't turn out the greatest, but they work. I wouldn't feel comfortable doing it for someone else's truck though.

So do I . The rest of the parts I need (at a minimum) won't be here for another week.5 or so.... Then it's a matter of trying to make it all plug-n-play....

I'll join you on the 'waiting for parts' list. I have some load resistors coming for a little research.

I've been looking for the clips like what is in the lower right of the pic. I emailed Dorman and got no response. Guess I have to make my own. But this is what mine with resistor built in looks like.

The socket pins? Those were leftover from my last modding....

Unless you mean the blue things, in which case, those aren't clips.

I like the built in resistor. A lil bit of silicone and call it done.

Yea the socket "contact" pins. I was trying to find some to add to the middle socket since there are left and right side versions. Dorman won't respond to my request for just the contacts. But I have a great low cost source for the boards and resistors.

3 wires in... Two wires out. The integration doesn't work quite right yet, but halfway there... Turn signal flashes opposite of front when brake is applied... Front on rear off, rear on front off... And by flash I mean manually doing it by touching turn power to 12v+

More tweaking is in order.

I finally got a little time to finish up my tail light circuit board mod. Thanks for all the help on here from all of you guys. This will now be on my site as a $100 pkg deal with 2 boards (exchange), 2 resistors, 6 Cree bulbs and will feature both lights on as parking lights with top for brake and 2nd for turn. This is great for those who have tinted tails. In case anyone is wondering about the grounds, I just swapped the wires on the bulbs to the same side.

You do realize that the OEM boards aren't the same as the Dormans, right?

Yea but I can still mod them with wire and solder. Same principle. If its more of a pain than anything else I guess my vendor for the Dorman boards will like me alot more and my price goes up a little bit on modded boards.

What does the other half look like?

Ok, I thought I had dual parking lights in my boards with this mod but for some reason the parking light in the middle Cree bulb will not come on, even with power going to it. It still acts like the stock configuration even tho I have the low sides connected together-only the upper one comes on. Everything else works fine. This has me really flabergasted. Any ideas?
Is it because one end of the resistor is connected to the high side in that middle socket and the 2 power leads go to the same place in the CREE bulb but one has the resistor for the low side already built in? I dunno. I'm confused now.

You need two grounds in the middle socket. The empty pin in your pic is the park ground....

On edit: on the top socket, the empty pin goes to brake 12v+

On edit part 2...wait, no... The top socket is miswired altogether.

Using your pic orientation, the left lower is brake +, left upper is park +, right side is ground.
