Keyless Entry only works when pointing it to the Tailgate

Morning all! (here in KSA anyways )
I've basically had this problem since I first purchased my TB. The keyless entry doesn't work unless i'm coming towards the back of the car or if i'm aiming towards the back while standing at the front (doesn't always work either).

At first it was ok but now it's just getting annoying especially when carrying groceries or holding my daughter. I know that the receiver is in the back (i think) and that's why it's mainly working when i'm near that area.

I've replaced the batteries so that's not it for sure. I'm guessing the possibility of the remote going bad is more than the receiver in the rear end. Just wanna confirm this before I go and buy new remotes cause i'll probably need to purchase through ebay and will take at least 2-3 weeks to get here lol!, If you have any ideas please share too!

A third option is just replace the whole system with a new car theft system and it's new remote, but I would really hate that hassle especially with the cheap brands they sell here locally.

Thanks guys!

I've got a similar issue. Fundamentally I think the button in the remote fob just wears out. My wife does not carry one for the Envoy and the first I used would only occasionally work even with a new battery. The second is also getting weak even with a new battery requiring me to be pretty close to get it to work. It does work better when I approach from the rear.

That's real strange but glad i'm not the only one in this! I've had bad luck in two things for as long as I can remember. The keyless entry to most of my former cars and my cellphone vibrator always sounds like you're getting electrified lol! somethings are just not meant to work for me! :frown:

Try holding the keyfob under your chin when using, honestly it works.

Do you have any aftermarket electronics in the vehicle? Anything like extra cellular phones, or portable communication devices, have read that these can interfere with the signal.

Do these modules have an external antenna coming from the module itself? I know our VW did and a short piece of speaker wire greatly improved the range.

LOL never really thought about that really.

I gotta GPS, got those USB thingy's where download MP3 music too and that's about it. They're off and unplugged in all cases when i'm not driving.

nope no antennas

Try removing the electronic devices just for arguements sake then try it again.

When I was mentioning the antenna just to clarify I'm referring to the module in the liftgate, not the keyfob, I have never looked so I'm uncertain.

I figured out my key fob transmitter was worn out - my wife's fob worked fine. I found a replacement on EBAY for under $25.

Wish it were that easy I've had this problem since purchased my TB way before I installed this stuff. The antenna never seen before maybe i'll need to look too lol

That's good to know, wish I had a spare FOB to actually confirm this but anyways I think i'll just get one and hopefully it'll work. I need a spare one anyways, I locked myself out 3 times already. Took me forever to find my way through but that's a whole other discussion! Thanks all

Yaay the FOB wont get programmed. I went out during my lunch break to programme the FOB but failed. This is what I did

•Insert the key into the ignition.
•Press the “Unlock” button on the drivers side door and hold it down.
•Turn the key to the “On” position without starting the vehicle.
•Turn the key to the “Off”position.
•Turn the key to the “On” position.
•Turn the key to the “Off” position.
•Release the “Unlock” button on the drivers side door, the vehicle should lock and unlock.
•Press the “Lock” and “Unlock” button the keyless entry remote at the same time until the doors lock and unlock.
•Turn the key to the “On” position in order to exit programming mode.

I managed to get the TB in programming mode which is step 7 successfully, but when pressing the Lock & Unlock on the remote nothing happens no matter the wait. I gave it 5-6 shots everytime exiting the programme mode but nothing :sadcry:

To be safe I also swapped the battery from my existing FOB and still nothing

P.s: There's no part number on the back of the FOB, but then again neither does the one I have on hand anyways

Hey guys so after getting home i played around some more but didn't work.

My original FOB got reprogrammed from the first time around but the new one wouldn't. Bummer!

I emailed the seller so either he sends me a new one or just give me a refund. Damn thing only costs like $8

I don't even think its worth sending back!

So, does the original FOB work any better after being reprogrammed? Just curious because both my daily use one AND the spare sitting in the drawer have "weak signal" with new batteries.

Nope it still sucks! While taking a look on the inside of the FOB there was black where the button lays. Cleaned it but still the same :sadcry:

Ps but I did find a way to unlock from a further distance. Just aim through the windows to the tailgate even when heading towards the car head first lol! Better than nothing !

This is pretty much my experience when I ordered a FOB for my company pickup. The Ebay seller (I don't recall the name) promptly sent out a replacement, and did not want the defective unit returned. The replacement unit works perfectly.

I figured he'd do the same and send a replacement! He took the short way out and wants to give a refund LOL! Haven't got it yet but guess today.

That's interesting there's no part number. My 03's Driver 1 shows GM15008008 (Driver 2 is xxxxxxxx09) and FCC ID: MYT3X68988. There's also a CANADA number which I believe is their equivalent of our FCC ID.
Do you know the origin of your original remote? Maybe it's the reason for the weak response if not an OE remote.

Nope don't have the origin but it's what I got with the car. My TB was originally imported from Japan (GM Motors Japan), so maybe it's different out there. Who knows

Bump! lol! I wonder if the reprogramming of a Key has anything to do with my vehicle being an import. Maybe I need to get the dealer to program the new FOB too?

Thanks! It seems I need to go to do a dealer now. But before that I did come across a shop that had a gm key sign. Also had programming keys and remotes so will give him a shot before hand lol

Try holding the remote tightly underneath your chin. Your jaw/skull acts as an antennae and significantly extends the range. Seriously, try it.

EDIT - This of course works only if your FOB is programmed correctly.
