06 envoy denali, a couple of days ago the key started not being able to rotate to the off position but the key itself was able to be removed in the acc position. Which indicated to me that the tumbler had expired, so I changed it out. But to my dismay the problem still is present short of the key being able to pull out. The key will turn back to the off position by pushing the secret button. Not sure where to go from here.
I have read a few older conversations

suggesting bad battery, (just replaced)

bad connections, (again just replaced)

manipulate steering wheel (only seems to perain to key not turning on)

Manipulate the shifter (no change)

The old key tumblee did turn back once for no apparent reason but immediately did not work the next time.

Before doing anything else...

(1) Visit @Mooseman 's Epic Thread and Download a GM-GMC Factory OEM Service Manual to have access to your SUV Wiring Diagrams and be able to trace and test your Ignition Circuitry.

(2) Visit your Under Hood Battery with an Automotive Battery Stress Tester and -=confirm=- its level of 12.+ Volts DC has Healthy Power and Amperage available. This Test can NOT be accomplished with a Basic DMM Voltage Reading:

Oh wow I have one of these testers. So I an assuming that you feel this is an electrical issue rather than a mechanical one

I would bet that the ignition switch is bad and the gears are flumoxed.

Pretty easy to get to and install a new one.

Installs from under the tumbler after removing the steering column upper/lower clamshell.

I would also look at the key release actuator/solenoid in the steering column, which basically does the same as the secret button. Possibly the power is not getting to it or it's defective. Check the schematics as to which wires go to it at the main column connector and see if the power is getting to it when in Park. If power is not getting to it, then something upstream is preventing it.

Roger that...and the other component that can also rarely come out of adjustment is: The "PNP" (Park Neutral Position) Safety Switch... which is easily accessible for re-adjusting and tightening via two bolts on the Left - Driver's Side of the 4L60E Transmission as per these images.

The ACTUAL Position of the "T" Shifter Handle must align on the IPC Fluorescent PRNDL & the Center Console PRNDL along with the PNP's ACTUAL Position on the outside of the 4L60E confirming that the Internal ATM Shifter Cog is -=definitely=- either IN the Park or IN the Neutral Position before allowing the Key Tumbler to Release the Switch and engage the Starter:

NOTE:

Ordinarily, the single or double Electrical Harness Connectors are both Factory Hot Glued and-or Twine Wrapped in place to the PNP to ensure good connections, however Harnesses have been cut, damaged or simply mis-installed on occasion and thus, worth a good going over for any Road Hazard Damage.

A Real World Example of What Can Go Wrong... and then ... Be Made RIGHT:
