Sandy just passed us yesterday.
It was like 300 miles off shore, several power outages and high surge.
I feel sorry for any one in its path at landfall.
Water over sea wall down town St Augustine and our canal flooded..

I have the spare tire back on the TB, and filled all the cars up with fuel.

filled fuel jugs for the chainsaw.

Two three gallon drinking water jugs full for drinking if the power is out so long the water goes.
About 20 gallons in kitty litter buckets for the toilet.

also filled the spare propane tank, so we can cook any food that thaws (after the rain stops, if the power is still out)

Have plenty of wood for a fire in the fireplace.

moved the yard waste trash cans where they will not blow around

and I have earplugs for when the guy across the street runs his generator too long.

The only thing about storm predictions now is they have to act like its the end of the world and if they dont some one will sue them. Yes its a big storm in size. But come one people its barely a cat 1 storm. If you have lived on the east coast for any amount of time you have been through noreaterners with more punch than this.

I was on the east coast for 30 years and been through many cat 1 storms.

It may only be a cat 1 hurricane, but I have seen tropical storms leave behind far more damage than a cat 1 hurricane. So even though it is a small category does not mean it can't do a considerable amount of damage. People who underestimate storms like this are usually the ones who need rescuing.

you will be fine. folks from NJ-NY up through PA are in for a bit if a storm, and since it is so widespread, it will take a while for power which does go out to be restored. expect lots of trees down and storm surge more widespread than you would expect from a little cat 1.

It's not the storm itself that they're worried about. They were predicting that a front heading toward the East would merge with the hurricane to make a bigger storm.

We are getting ready for the storm, we are in the area where the front and Sandy are supposed to merge together, forecast of 4-8 inches of rain and a high wind warning so I am getting the house ready.

The TB is going to be providing our home with heat, got the inverter ready to power our furnace and charge our batteries while the power is out.
Freezer full of ice and icemaker still going to fill the bags.
Not worried about water as our city water system could lose power for a week before there would be an issue at our end.
Propane tanks full and natural gas hookup ready incase we run out of propane we can switch the grill over to NG.

Only thing I am worried about is the giant tree in the front yard that hangs over the house, we tried to get it cut down this summer but couldn't find a reasonable price so it is still there. It is healthy but it has always made us nervous out there hanging over the house..

you might get lucky and have it blow away from the house.

Ohio
yea here up north off of the lake in Ohio is supposed to get a little bad too theyre saying.. not as bad as the storm itself or this whole "Frankenstorm" as the forecasters are calling it since there are 2 storms merging... but I live right off of Lake Erie (literally like 500 ft off the shore), and the Black river is south of me....and theyre "predicting"

What You Need to Know In Northeast Ohio About The Storm:
-Biggest impact will be from the wind
-Strongest wind along the lakeshore Monday PM-Tuesday AM (Gusts to 65mph)
-Potential flooding along the south shore of Lake Erie with very large waves
-Will have to monitor local rivers/flood prone areas as additional rainfal
l amounts will range from 2-5 inches
-Rain will continue through the end of the week, with drier air arriving for next weekend.

This note from the National Weather Service is especially important:
MEDIA MAY WANT TO REALLY STRESS STAYING AWAY FROM
TREES...ESPECIALLY SINCE LARGE TREES MAY UPROOT DUE TO STRESSES ON
THE WEAKER SIDE OF THE ROOT STRUCTURE. STORM WINDS ARE NOT
EXPECTED FROM THE PREVAILING WESTERLY DIRECTION AND THIS MAY HELP
TO PUT A LOT OF STRESS ON BRANCHES AND THE TREES AS WELL. AVOID
PARKING AUTOMOBILES UNDER TREES AND POWER LINES AS WELL AS THE
EVENT UNFOLDS.

now do i think it will get as drastic as they are calling for... naaaah not really... we've had worse storms over the summer in terms of wind and rain (just had water spouts 2 weeks ago)... but this is Ohio, and living off the lake is very unpredictible... so we'll see what happens... for all those in the direct path of Sandy, Good Luck and prayers sent for no damages, and healthy families...

Apparently they are saying the winds are going to be more constant rather than in waves. We have the generator filled up, gas can filled, propane tanks filled and good thing I tossed my decrepid grill in the trash a few weeks ago ....:hissyfit:so I haven't replaced it yet. The genny should run everything we need but always better to be safe than sorry.

Cleaned up all the leaves yesterday so after the storm I won't have such a monster mess to clean up.....just a mess.

This would be alot of snow.

Started clearing out the garage Friday night (night shift so really Saturday morning), made enough room for the fiances Jetta and got rid of a bunch of junk. Got the usual water, batteries etc, extra propane tank and dry ice for the cooler to keep the meat frozen. Gonna grill if we lose power. Just waiting for work to close, the NAVY is very persistent though, the base is on essential personnel only and we still have to come in (yay being a contractor).

It has been steady heavy rain here since about 2pm, winds have been light around 25-30 mph. Nothing really bad yet, we are over 2 inches of rain so far, have been told to expect between 10-12" in our area . No generator, but have plenty of back up batteries for all of the toys, both cells have been charged as well as spare batteries. Sitting here ready to ride it out.

Everyone be safe.

Its supposed to be rough here, my little town becomes an island thanks to the passaic river and all the NJ swamps...

and its not that we haven't seen any category 1 storms, its the fact that they usually only last 6-9 hours, and Sandy is deciding to stay around for up to 36.

Meh, I think I am far enough away to where were just expecting some rain and a little wind 20-35mph sustained. Most of the trees are bare now so I'm not expecting any breakage from the hardwoods, the 2 pines next to the driveway may be another story.

The boat was moved into indoor storage further up north, 75 miles north actually at our camp since " acts of god" have a higher deductible. 500 vs. 2,000

Couple inches of rain is all there predicting for upstate . We have a generator hard wired into the house, kicks on after 5 mins without power.

Delaware has issued a LEVEL 2 driving restriction. This restriction is 100% more serious then a level 1 driving restriction.

What does that mean? Limited driving of some kind I'm guessing?

via google:

According to state law, a ‘Level 2 Driving Restriction’ provides that no person shall operate a motor vehicle on Delaware roadways other than essential personnel. ‘Essential personnel’ includes those employees necessary to maintain the core functions of government and maintain health and safety by providing utility services, healthcare services, and food and fuel deliveries. In addition, some private employers have received a waiver from the Delaware Emergency Management Agency for essential employees.”

Violators face a penalty fine of up to $115 on first offense, and a fine of up to $200 and up to 30 days in jail for subsequent offenses

Yeah we gotta stay off the roads. I wouldn't chance it, but if I did, I probably couldn't get out of my neighborhood anyway.

Can you imagine getting popped for that? How would that conversation go in the box?

"What are you in for?"
"I went to royal farms during a LEVEL 2 driving restriction."
"Respect."

"Out of an abundance of caution" is the new paradigm for cautions and warnings that might end up being excessive when looking back on events.

Just this week, some Italian seismologists were CONVICTED of manslaughter for under-alarming on an impending earthquake. As if that's an exact science. Insanity reigns during uncertain times.

I read about that last week. Convicted of manslaughter, that is insane. Are we in the dark ages again?

Well, the storm is expected to pickup here around 4 this evening. Right now we are just getting wet with light winds. I have taken a picture out my bedroom window of our back yard as a before picture. I will update as the storm gets worse and we will see if anything changes in our little world...

I blame the liberals. More and more rules, regulations laws and BS nanny crap. Before you know it we are being taxed to fart, but if the smell offends someone you may go to jail.

Just got word to not come in until wed at 1500. :wootwoot:. Sucks now because I have to either use vacation, no pay or make up the time.

Even better my new tires will be here today, if they are here before 6pm they are getting installed.

So far it has been a ton of rain, some pretty nice gusts and some fallen branches. Went out for a bit about an hour ago to see who might be open for dinner, started cooking last hurricane and lost power so was not going to have that happen again. We are supposed to be getting the worst part of the storm between now and tomorrow morning. Hopefully it stays good and we can keep power. More worried about something falling on the house or the truck than anything. Just chilling in the basement watching movies.

Everyone else at the park to check out the lake too? LOL. You'd think that the park would be deserted during a nasty storm.

The wife and I were just sitting here on the second floor of the house and a big gust hit all at once and the floor literally bounced under our feet. We both gave eachother this dumbfounded look like holy shyt... LOL

But as you can tell the power has held out so far...
