I'm guessing the front passenger half shaft shouldn't have this much play where it goes into the splined disconnect assembly.

Uhh definitely not. You got one shot disconnect there. New outer seal an bearing, at least, but you'll probably need new thrust washers too. I would suspect the bearing surface of the cv shaft is pretty well shot.

Yeah, the axle's out. Most of the seal was still there and there were evidence fragments that a bearing did exist at one time. Shaft bearing surface isn't horrible, but its done. Time for a disconnect rebuild and a new axle. I know ORTB has some good additional info on the disconnect.

ORTB is the place: Offroadtb.com Front Axle 4WD Disconnect

GM did us no favors by making that a sealed unit that "never needed regreasing". Offroaders have mostly started to rebuild/regrease them properly every time we change CV shafts, which for me is about every 25-30K.

Do the bearings and/or seals need replaced in that time or do you just typically regrease stuff?

Thanks for that link Roadie.....I know what I will be doing on my vacation while changing the struts.
