Best bidirectional tool for under $500?

Since I'm getting into more serious DIY territory it looks like I need to get an equally serious scan tool. Based on the searching I've done, I've established a budget of $500 which should get me something that performs the functions I need most badly - EVAP system tests, ABS actuation, engine sensor data readings, and the like.

I was considering the Icon T7 from Harbor Freight as I'm an ITC member and it's on sale for $340. However, I've dug up a lesser known brand called YOUCANIC who purports to sell a scanner with wireless diagnostic capability, a camera for VIN lookup, topology, and FREE LIFETIME updates with comparable or even better capabilities than the T7 and most other scanners in the same price bracket. The T7 only gives you a year of updates without a paid subscription, can only perform diagnostic functions while wired up, and has no camera or topology.

The YOUCANIC seems like it beats the pants off anything else in that bracket, sitting roughly between the Icon T7 and T8 in capability, but legit reviews are sparse and lots of the YouTube reviews in particular are seemingly from people who got a rebate for posting a review. The company being fairly new and their products not having been covered by any notable outlet makes me a little nervous about dropping $500 on one of their tools. Anything else I should consider?

I'm considering the broad based scanner route instead of something brand specific like a Tech2 knockoff because I foresee owning other cars in the future and I also own a Toyota, so if I got a Tech2 I'd still have to get something else for that as well.

Got links?

Whatever scanner you choose, watch out for anything that requires a subscription for some or all of the functions or updates. The Launch scanner I got requires an annual subscription for some GM functions. Their subscriptions are brand specific so if I need to do something on another brand for more than the basic functions, I have to pay. Updates are free but that's just for the base scanner functions.

You're right to not go for the Tech 2 or anything specific to just GM (i.e. MDI) as that would limit you to just GM. And the Tech 2 clones are getting harder to find and more expensive as well as being hopelessly outdated. If you ever need to program a module via TDS, there are other tools available for that.

Found the Youcanic and also saw this video, which didn't look like it was sponsored or associated to the company.

It looks very good for this price point. Screen looks to be on the smaller side at 7" so for any intense professional work could be annoying, but for hard core weekend shadetree mechanics, it should fit the bill nicely. It even has topology mapping which is something I've always looked for but has been unaffordable for me. AI assistant looks interesting too. For me, this one would be over $700CAD + shipping outside the US and taxes, I'd probably be getting close to $1000CAD.

If this one is within your budget, I'd go for it.

The Icon T7 looked kinda meh to me. No free updates after a year, no topology map, no AI, no Bluetooth adapter. Reminds me of my cheaper Launch. It's Ok but lacking in some areas. Basing myself on this video of it:

Have you checked for what TOP DON and Autel and Foxwell have to offer?

It all boils down to the age-old question: what problem are you trying to solve?

There is a broad the range (& quantity) of tools available. Combine that with a vast online knowledge base, you may also want to consider multiple solutions rather than a single tool that does it all.

Personally, I use an ELM327 WiFi dongle coupled with Torque Pro for all of my low- to mid-level jobs supporting my own vehicles as well as my friends'. For more in-depth work I have been successful with aftermarket knockoffs of OEM tools (VxDiag Nano for GM, Vida/Mongoose for Volvo). They are by no means perfect, but they get the bulk of the jobs done.

To @Mooseman's point above, I have not had to do any programming. If/when I do I would then pursue the specific tool as needed for that job. This gets the job done today without signing up for a higher priced tool now & ongoing subscriptions . My two cents.
