This is something everyone should learn. I know i didn't start using a Multimeter as soon as i came out to this world. I too had to learn. So this tutorial is not here for pun but to help you further diagnose not just your car but any and every electrical thing in and around you.

Buy an auto-ranging meter, saves a lot of hassle setting your scale.

You don't need to spend hundreds of dollars on a fluke or snap-on meter for basic car care and the vast majority of interior electrical troubleshooting and modification, a 30-50 dollar Craftsman will do everything you need.

A backlit LCD is nice for those times when you're buried under the dash, but it isn't a deal breaker.

Get extra sets of leads including ones that have an alligator clamp on the end so you can leave a ground hooked up and free your hand.

Most multimeters have fuses built in, and even come with an extra one or two. This is so you don't accidentally overload them.

Meters can sometimes do odd things when a lead isn't plugged all the way in, when there's a bad spot in the lead wire, or when your battery is low. Check these things if your readings are not consistent.
