Just took my '06 Envoy/135k in for it's annual PA Safety inspection. It failed due to upper ball joints needing replacement. Now I consider myself fairly good at repairs as I've done several to my truck. The question is, should I do the ball joints myself or take it to a shop. And if taken to a shop, what is the likely cost

Had mine done by a mechanic, upper and lower, for $200 btu that was an unusually good price. Stealership could easily be a 4 hour rated job so depends on the hourly rate plus shop supplies, etc. FWIW, I was told this is a difficult job. Think about replacing the upper control arms while you're in there since the bushings are probably shot. Good pricing on RockAuto.
