Transmission whining?

I have an 02 trailblazer, and when its in park or neutral it sounds normal. But when it goes into any gear the transmission starts this loud whining and as I accelerate it gets higher pitched. I know I hear a lot of cars making the same noise, but I didn't know if this is just something you deal with or if there is a way to eliminate the noise. It's more annoying than anything else.

Mileage? Maintenance history? Especially the transmission.

172k on body, 152k on motor. I bought it in august of last year. Motor went bad on me and put a used one in it. Got it back up and running around Feb of this year and ever since then the maintenance has been kept up perfectly. I haven't done anything to the transmission but they did put new fluid in it when the new motor was put in. I know I can easily look this up online, but how much would a pump run me? Is there a better quality one over some that are out there? Any suggestions?

the only thing that is sort of tricky is replacing the teflon seals on the input shaft. not sure you even have to, but better safe than sorry. other than that, its just a matter of unscrewing it from the case, and prying it up. swap the seal, drop the new one on an screw it down.

*edit after looking at it, you're not changing the teflon seals without pulling the reverse drum so either leave them or pay someone :)

Lol ill prob pay someone :/ but how long do you think I have? Is it something that needs to be done immediately? I guess my question is, what happens if the transmission pump goes completely out? And what's a decent price to have a mechanic put it in? If I buy the pump myself..

Fortunately, when your pump fails and you lose fluid pressure the trans just reverts to neutral.
IIRC the few members who have had their pump fail reported it letting go while cruising on the highway with little to no warning. Not the ideal place to suddenly lose power and get stranded.

Point being: get it fixed ASAP. It's a time bomb at this point. :twocents:

Well the good thing is you have a 2WD so it may not be that bad to remove it.

If you pull it out, you may as well change the clutches and add the beast sun shell.

Okay, so update. Took it by a transmission shop and the guy said it sounded like the fly wheel was cracked for it to be whining like that. Does this even sound like it could be a possibility to Yall? I wouldn't think so but wanted to get your input

Good question. A mechanic's stethoscope would be able to pinpoint where the sound is coming from, did they just take a listen "by ear" and tell you this?

I have a Sierra with the same tranny. It does the same thing but I haven't investigated to see where it's coming from. It doesn't do it all the time though. Come to think about it I don't think it has done it for awhile unless I'm just used to the noise. If you would, let us know what the outcome is. I'm interested to see what the fix is.

Mine does it all the time. And they didn't use a stethoscope, they did just listen to it but they crawled under it and everything. Said it has a certain vibration that's what makes them think its the flywheel. Just sounds crazy to me. I would think the pump.
