Aight... Some of you may know I did the 2005- dual e-fan mod with a Nelson Performance/GAP relay harness, plus PCM programming.
The fans work great, but I discovered something mildly unnerving now that the ambient temps do not require air conditioning.
To clarify, my 2002 Burb has the factory tow package, so the engine radiator is 32 inches. I also have a 40k BTU auxiliary transmission cooler for the 4L60.
The tow pkg engine rad is such a big heat sink the 1st fan rarely does come on in city traffic at 50-60 F ambient, since the coolant temp is safe and steady in operation, once the engine heats up.
When A/C is off, the 2nd fan does not suck air through the condenser, engine rad and aux trans cooler. This makes the trans fluid reach 180-190 F (as read by the trans temp gauge on my Silverado-donated cluster); otherwise (with A/C and 2nd fan running) it's lower, at about 170 F, even in ambient temps around 90 F. I don't need to tell you this temperature is somewhat unnerving given the effect of trans fluid (over)heat on the 4L60.
(I admit that I haven't read the trans fluid temp at hwy speeds, where the oncoming air should cool the cooler core a bit.)
I don't want to cut the 1st fan turn-on temperature in the PCM as it would not be optimum for combustion.
Should I just leave it as it is and simply change the trans fluid more often, or go with an aux trans cooler fan controlled by a 180 F fluid t-stat?
