So now my oils pressure gauge is reading above 80. It goes to 80 upon start up and them creeps past 80.

No check engine light. seems to be running fine. Oil is at full mark on the dipstick and is not foamy or anything.

How do check to see wether the sensor is bad vs stepper motor vs actual high oil pressure?

I did replace all my stepper motors about six months ago.

It is not the stepper motor if the gauge always returns to zero when it is turned off, most likely your Oil Pressure Sending Unit.

Make sure you get the one for the V8.

Or thread in a manual oil pressure gauge in place of the sensor. Of get an advanced scan tool to look at the raw sensor data to see if it's the sensor or the dash gauge that's fibbing.

It can be cheaper to shotgun this as a DIY home mechanic by just putting in a new sensor, and then paying a shop for a better diagnosis if the sensor isn't the cure.

So i changed the pressure sensor.

I runs at about 45 and responds to acceleration by going up to 55.

Does that sound ok? I seem to remember the old one just sitting at 40 no matter how I drove.

Also when I shut it off it stopped at about 5 instead of 0. Am I supposed to disconnect the battery so it will all re calibrate?

One other concern I had was during the installation of the new sensor it never bottomed out. It certainly was tight but I finally just stopped because I was afraid it would break.

any input would be greatly appreciated, Thanks.

i think to calibrate gauges, you have to unplug the gauge cluster from the harness.. then when you plug it in, you will see all the needles dance, and return to there homes... thats what happened when i had my gauge cluster out for my LED mod.. i never noticed it happening while having my battery unhooked.. but i could be mistaken as i never paid attention to the cluster after reconnecting my battery...

and i see you're in Cleveland... im about 30 min west of you in lorain county...

Actually I'm a little further east in Madison.

also I should add that I bought my sensor from autozone. maybe I should see about the oem part.

Proper operation is that the gauges will initialize and go to zero when key is first turned on. They usually go back to zero when turned off.

If any gauge "zeros" at random places when first powered up, the stepper motor is bad.
If any gauge "zeros" at the same position that is not zero, then the needle needs to be removed and put back on so it points to zero when initialized.

I noticed you posted that you replaced all the stepper motors about six months ago, recheck all of your zero positions.

Ok by using BRomanJr's advice I re zeroed my oil pressure gauge and it now rests at zero when the motor is shut off and the key is removed.

when running the engine and driving the oil pressure gauge hovers close to 40.

I guess I'll call it fixed.

My gas gauge refuses to behave. I hear clicking in the dash. I assume one of the steppers was bad and just by bad luck I managed to put it in the one place that was already bad.

I suppose I don't have much to lose by getting another one and replacing it before I go digging into the tank.
