Oil Life Sensor

I feel like an idiot for asking, but I haven't done an oil change on anything newer than a 2000. I changed the oil in my Rainier on Saturday and am unsure how to reset the sensor so my light will turn off. I read somewhere that you insert the key, turn it to run, press the accelerator 3x rapidly, and turn it back to off. Is this correct? I don't like asking what should be common knowledge, but i'd rather know. I tried searching the forum and didn't come up with anything. I'm currently downloading the service manual (thanks to Mooseman for the u/l), but it's stuck at around 80%. Not sure if the answer is in there or not, but i'll find out soon enough!

while you have the oil life display on your insturment panel, press enter and hold it for a few. should reset.

this works for trip odometers and timers as well.

there is an alternate way if you do not have any alpha displays, and only dummy lights.

I am guessing from your 80% reading you have the alpha display.

Fairly sure i just have the dummy light. All i see on the display is the "oil can and wrench" lit up.

Do you have buttons on the steering wheel? If you do, the ones on the lower right are the ones your after. Press the left one and watch your DIC to see when it comes to oil life remaining, stop there. Now, press and hold the right button until it resets to 100%.

If you don't, here is the reset straight from the manual:

To reset the change engine oil light, do the following:
1. Turn the ignition key to RUN with the engine off.
2. Fully press and release the accelerator pedal slowly
three times within five seconds.
3. Turn the key to LOCK.
If the change engine oil light comes back on when you
start your vehicle, the engine oil life system has not
reset. Repeat the procedure.

Worked like a charm, but i had a question. Are there different button configurations? I ended up using the bottom left (gas pump logo) to get to the oil life screen, then the bottom right for enter. Not sure if it's the same for everyone so i figured i'd ask. Thanks again guys!

Yes, same thing. Except I hold my lower right button for 10seconds to reset.

This stuff should also be in the Owner's Manual. Trailvoy used to have them, and they're trivially found on the net, so we don't have our own PDFs here. But they're out there in case you have a used truck where the previous owner stole it.

The last part of your statement is my ordeal exactly! I d/l'd the manual earlier today, but it took so long I got my info here first. I have it for future reference now, so i should be asking less common questions. I tried to look it up first and found the alternate mode of resetting it. I just wanted to be sure before trying it. I'd rather ask people that work on their own than trust random info i find on the net.

I searched the forum earlier, but neglected to look at the FAQ section. What do you know, it's in there. Video and all... Between that sticky and the manuals I downloaded earlier, most of my questions will be answered! :wootwoot:

You can download the owners' manual from www.my.buick.com . Look at the section "get to know my vehicle". The manual for my 03 Envoy is still available but the 95 S-10 wasn't. If you have multiple GM vehicles you can create accounts and all will show up at logon of any registered vehicle. It doesn't appear you need to create an account just to download the owners' manual
For other GM vehicles just change buick to your brand....

No biggie, you guys gave me a nudge in the right direction and it was simple to figure out the rest. Thanks again:thumbsup:
