I was driving home from vacation, I had the cruise set on 70 mph and all the sudden the rpm's reved up to about 5000. I tapped on the brake to shut off the cruise. I pushed on the gas pedal and had no forward drive. Pulled off to the shoulder and had no forward or reverse. I tried 4WD and nothing there either. no leaks, no loud bang. Anyone have any idea's? Thanks in advance!!!

Have you had the trans serviced recently (i.e. fluid and filter?)

If the wrong filter (shallow pan filter) was installed it could have fallen from the valve body starving the pump of fluid. Without fluid pressure the transmission defaults to "neutral" for safety. A low fluid level will have the same effect though I would think if you were borderline enough would drain back to the pan after stopping the engine to at least temporarily get you back in gear.

It seems unlikely to experience a major mechanical failure at cruise--though it is definitely possible. Have you tried manually selecting all gears too (D,3,2,1)?

no drive in 3, 2 ,1, D or R. Fluid looked ok, I did see a couple specks on the dip stick when checking it on the side of the road. I did a trans filter and fluid change in 07/2011 about 30,000 miles ago. it has 125,000 on it now. never had any issues till the other day. Thanks for your quick reply's!!

Are you posting this from the side of the highway with a dead vehicle? Depending on your distance from home, and what level AAA membership you have, get it towed to your home town, and ask for recommendations for a trustworthy and competent transmission shop. Also check Yelp for reviews. This doesn't sound like the kind of failure you're going to solve by the side of the road, or using forum advice. Unless you got to a parking lot near a parts store and you're carrying sufficient tools to drop the transmission pan and check for debris. I also love my AAA membership for the trip interruption benefit, so they pay for hotel and meals for a couple of days if I'm disabled away from home. That pays off every couple of years for me.

Hello Roadie,

How you doing, You've helped me a few times on the other site. I have AAA and already had it towed to a dealership near me. Broke down 50 miles from home, coming back from a camping trip with the family, pulling our popup. I just wanted to know if anyone has heard of a trans doing what mine did. I've search a sites and couldn't find anything similar.

I ended up taking it to a family friends trans shop. The oil pump failed. Had the whole trans and converter rebuilt with HD Sun Shell, corvette servo, thanks for everyone's help with it.

Thanks for following up:thumbsup: Curious about how the pump failed?

Looks like I was right about the losing fluid pressure but wrong about the cause :eyebrowhuh:

In most cases, I need to be able to limp or get pulled back to pavement before AAA will touch me. In Borrego Springs (and I assume many other places) there are private offroad recovery specialists with extreme vehicles that offer that service. I've seen Unimogs set up for the job. This is a picture of a nice new one, not the one in Borrego. A recovery is reported to cost around $700. Gives one great incentive to be able to fix almost anything offroad carrying all sorts of spares and not have to pay for a tow.

I recently had a very similar problem. However, when I would turn off the engine and let the transmission rest for a short time I could restart and drive for about a mile or so then full slippage of all gears as above regardless of easy or hard throttle starts.. Used this method to nurse my Bravada to a GM dealer who supposedly pulled the oil pan, found some debris and said the transmission needed to be replaced. Since I had a $1000 limit for repair authorization I had them button it up. Used the nursing procedure to get home. Fluid level was checked before dealer visit and correct. Reading a number of forum and web entries, it seems like maybe a oil pump or pressure control solenoid. Any other ideas? I'd really rather not have to buy a rebuilt.
Thanks in advance.

These guys recover at some offroad parks and make vids of the actions. Not bad watching. http://m.youtube.com/#/user/recoveryteam?desktop_uri=/user/recoveryteam
