Hey guys! Im peeking back in after selling my 2002 Envoy last September (2012).

I was searching CL the other day for a used 2002 Envoy or Trailblazer on the cheap for the winter.

Guess what I found? YUP! My Envoy was back up for sale by the people who bought it!! :rotfl: With 15,000 more miles and $1500 cheaper than what I sold it to them for. Ha!

And guess who is driving out to pick it up tomorrow? :lipsrsealed:

My friends/family think I've lost it.... lol.... Have I?! I'm just looking for confirmation thats all

No, I don't think that you have lost it when you found it.
So, what did it do on it's vacation?

Haha...thanks for the laughs!

I went and inspected my 'Voy today and I dont know where to go from here :undecided:

The truck looks the same, heck it might even be cleaner - they just had it detailed! BUT there is a very strong raw gas odor from the gas tank area. My bet is its the ominous fuel pump rust. When the truck wasnt running, the smell went away after a few minutes. But when running it was very strong.

Then, I noticed the coolant reservoir was almost empty. I didn't smell it myself, but my friend said they smelled "burning coolant", and they described it as the smell of when coolant is dripping onto a hot engine/exhaust. I was under the hood and checking everything but couldnt see where the coolant was going, didnt see any puddles, or past leakage points. My worst fear is the line that runs along side the back of the cylinder head. I did have some heater hose leakage when I had the truck. I fixed it by changing the plastic connectors that the hoses clip onto at the heater core. I did check those when I was down there and there was no drippage/signs of past leakage so its not leaking there. The water pump (which I replaced a few years ago) still had no play and there were no signs of spray/leakage there either. :undecided:

The truck is now missing 1 of the wheel's center cap, needs brake pads soon (lifetime warranty on those! lol), and the front driver side wheel inside is wore out a lot more than the rest of the tire. I had Destination A/T's put on 40,000 miles ago or so and replaced the ball joints/tie rods/upper and lower control arms along with an alignment. The rest of the tires are showing normal wear.

I switched it into 4wd and it took a lot longer than I remember. It seems to have taken 10 seconds. Before I remember it being almost instant..maybe 3-4 seconds max.

In the past 12 months and 15,000 miles it seems they changed the oil on time, replaced the power steering lines and probably when they smelled gas and coolant started disappearing they said "eff this" and put it up for sale.

Im not sure where to go from here.... feedback?

Oh! And the A/C no longer blows cold, which I never had a problem with it ever before. It was always ice freaking cold.

She said it needs recharged (To me, thats the generic statement to use when the A/C is no longer operating for whatever reason - which could be expensive).

The compressor doesn't kick on at all when I commanded it to. :frown:

The AC and coolant might be directly related. Any coolant marks by the water pump where it might have dried by the AC compressor?

Hmmmmmm I didnt see anything but I really need to get underneath the truck with the front end on ramps to thoroughly check it. From above, I saw no obvious signs of any water pump leakage.

Man that is the @#$%ing truth! We're in the market for another vehicle and the things that people say along those lines are just nuts. My wife found a Tahoe and the owner said "trans doesn't shift, just needs a $40 solenoid". She found another that said "turn signals don't work, just needs a switch, pretty easy to fix". You would think that if those problems were so easy and cheap to fix that they would be taken care of before they were put up for sale.

Sorry for the off topic but what you said is so freaking true that I had to comment on it!

I think I'd pass on it now. Aren't you the guy who replaced the cam phaser? If you are, then I know you got mechanical skills so labor wouldn't be an issue but that seems like it's going to take a lot of work to cover the four main issues to get her back where she was. And like you said you have to consider that the root causes of the coolant and a/c leaks are to be determined. Who knows how much it would take just in parts to get her right, not including your time.

Sounds like they want to cut their losses, have you laid down all the issues...might get it for a real good price. I had the fuel issue and was the pump....don't let it go, it will bite you quick....just ask Meerschm.

Could be the heater hose dripping on the exhaust.

Wifey has the voy for 3 days, I get it back on Thurs....can't imagine a year....

I slept over it... and am still undecided what to do. :undecided:

Part of me (the gearhead DIY mechanic) thinks replacing the fuel pump myself, possible heater hoses is just "another day with the Envoy"...lol.

Then the other part tells me... do I really want to pay somebody to buy back my Envoy and then get it to have to sink more money into it?? Economically, it doesnt make sense.

I was thinking more about it and the a/c could be the low pressure cut off switch - I replaced it 4 or so years ago with an Autozone part, and it always leaked green dye after I replaced it. I bet after 4 summers worth of heavy a/c usage, either the low pressure cut off switch shit the bed or it finally leaked out all the r-134a.

I've been researching the fuel pump issue, since the truck now has 177k on it, and I live not too far from one of the best Trailvoy salvage yards, I could pick up a good condition used fuel pump for $50 or so and replace it myself. After looking at the used fuel pumps on ebay and stuff, its easy to see that mine is probably rusted to heck. The ones on ebay were from newer T360's and rusted to heck, and people are still selling them trying to make a buck. Geesh.

Anyways, thats me trying to justify the purchase when the other more practical me goes "Chris this doesnt make economic sense - you are going to put more money and work into this truck and thats exactly why you sold it in the first place". I have to decide if its worth it... hard decision! I always loved my 'Voy.....

I'd just go in and tell them, here are the issues I see... It's going to take me time and money to fix them. I'm willing to give you $xxxx and they take it or leave it.

Removing the "it's your old truck" factor, if it wasn't one you owned before, would you still be interested with the issues it has.

Basically on paper it sounds like someone paid you a little over a hundred bucks a month to "rent" (@$1500 less than sale) your vehicle without knowing their true driving habits, and maintenance. Now you are stuck making the repairs. Unless you get it for a steal, I would pass. On the other hand, it you are looking for a GMT360, you know more about this one than others. Find a newer one! Upgrade to make it worth your while in a year from now? :twocents:

I agree with Grimor's tactic

Thanks guys.

You're right - I would not buy the truck for that price with the problems it now has... but I would for another $1000 knocked off!

However, I tried bartering with the seller and its a no go. They are set firm on their price (I was too when I sold it to them) lol.

Ive decided to pass on it. To be honest, I always fantasized about a pewter colored Envoy/TB. I found two locally that are pewter, 1 has really low miles for a 2003 (96k). The other has higher miles but I think it sold. The dark blue gets dirty so easy and shows scratches/swirls bad!!

Oh well, Ill figure it out. Would be nice to have a 4wd for winter again, and to tow my boat.

If you're just looking for a winter beater, what about looking for a blazer/jimmy? You can sometimes find those for around a grand.

So I found a very nice condition 2002 Bravada with 140,000 miles local. I know the Bravy's are AWD and I thought I remember chatter about problems with the AWD system.

Any reason for me to avoid the Bravadas?

I would avoid an '02 before an awd Bravada. With the age and being a first year of production model I would be hesitant unless the price was right.

There is one here. http://desmoines.craigslist.org/ctd/4048051558.html
I know its a ways away but for prob less than $500 for gas and then time it could happen. Don't know what the price is on the local one. But gives a little bargaining factor. That's if you are seriously looking at them

Brief side question, what/where is this famous 360 scrapyard? I wouldn't be far from it either and might like to browse...

Its deep in Detroit but they specialize in T360's. I stopped by a few years ago to pick up some headlights and the place has to be 50000sq ft warehouse, not to mention a HUGE yard where they were dismantling T360's of all types and/or rebuilding them.
On Ebay, the places user name is 1933trader. Some people here have mentioned it before.

Heres the places ebay stuff for sale (you'll notice its almost ALL T360 parts):
1933trader | eBay

I dont remember the exact address but its in Detroit off of Hubbell IIRC. It took me ~20-25 minutes to get there.
