I am making a list of brands to stay away from and brands that are good. I am using stuff like parts, maintenance parts and fluids. Here is what I have so far. Help me add to it.

Good: Wix Filters, Mobil 1, AC Delco, Kendall Oil, Prestone, Bosch Wipers, Lucas and Optima.

Bad: Most Bosch, FRAM!!!, Super Tech, STP, Pennzoil, Puralator, Peak, Store Brands and Restore.

Please help by adding some

What's wrong with Bosch and Purolator filters, or Peak washer fluid?

I stay away from any Lucas oil "additive" as it promotes oil foaming (check out Bobistheoilguy.com) and Optima batteries aren't what they used to be.

Optima's reputation suffered greatly after a botched transfer to a Mexican factory. Years ago. I see no reason to go back now. YMMV.

Why would super tech tranny fluid be bad. It meets GM specs. Says so on the bottle.

I have a hard time trusting my transmission or engine to walmart house brand stuff, especially when you get 5 bottles of 5W-30 motor oil and they pour 2-3 slightly different colors!

Understand that there are no bad brands. Only better ones. Many parts need to meet minimum federal specs in order to be marketed for automotive use. Most exceed these requirements.

Like the criminally - designed Ebay lift kits? Chinese counterfeit parts?

There are crooks out there, sometimes masquerading as legitimate vendors.

You got a point there. But I am talking about the parts carried in automotive stores. The ones you see commericals for. If you stick with them you shouldn't have a problem. Even the chinese made parts carried in stores need to meet certain criteria. They might not last as long, but its a free market and you did get what you payed for. A parts longevity is unrelated to actual fit and finish.

Super Tech oil filters are surprisingly good. On BITOG they get a good rap and I've been using them for years.

I might want to take a look at them. The industry has been moving towards "E core" filters. As for "enviromentally friendly". They have less metal and more polyresin inside which is claimed to be stronger than the metal used to support the filter media in old filters. You might notice the filters now say PF-61E instead of the old PF-61. Supposedly it's less waste and "kinder" to the landfill/environment plus they are better/stronger.

I agree. My Bosch O2 has been working great... knock on wood

Also, I use supertech Dexron VI. If it's good enough to get Dex VI classification, it must be good stuff.

Some bad news...just found out the Super Tech oil filters have been discontinued. :frown: No idea why though.

super tech oil is fine. I have been running full syn for years had a 89 Grand Marquis with 160000 on it when I sold it and they drove it till the frame rotted out with well over 200000 on it by then. sold my Lincoln Town Car with 140000 and the guy passes me from time to time I drove that hard everyday for years. My TB has 150000 and I drive 60 miles everyday to work and I tow from time to time to nothern Michigan. Plus my wifes 95 YJ jeep has over 175000 on it. any oil brand is fine as long as you keep track of it and change it when needed. pay as much as you want for oil if it helps you sleep at night, but the extra cost won't save you if you don't keep proper maintenance. working in auto salvage for 10 years I have seen blown engines blown at 15000 and good non-leaking smooth running with over 300000.

Walmart, super tech, oil is not made by walmart. It is made be Pennzoil, texaco or who ever provides the cheapest bid that go around. If you look at the MSDS sheets you will see this.

This go around in 2007 it was made by Quakerstate/pennzoil.

Supertech 5w-30 full synthetic is made by warren distribution. They make synthetic oil according to their website. This has been beaten to death over at BITOG.

Used to use Purolator filters on the s-10, used Fram (never again) until one collapsed on me.

Optima did me wrong, had a red top give out on me. Had a 4 inch crack down the side and was releasing what looked like steam for well over an hour. Took it back to Advanced Auto. I show the guy the crack and proceeds to put it in the machine to test. I walk away for 20 min come back, he says It's good. I tell him run it again and it fails in 30 seconds. Not sure why he did not believe the crack was real. That battery was replaced 4 times in 2 years.

I used Purolator all the time on my three GMC sonomas I used to have. No issues. Fram i never used.

But you might have had something wrong with your engine. Read this article.

Diagnosing Engine Oil Filters with Collapsed Center Tubes

Fram was the only filter I have ever had a problem with. Have used Delco, Mobil 1, purolator and wix. The one time I used fram it collapsed.
