Amateur Storm Chasers

I have been an active participant of SKYWARN since 1998 when we got our first boat. I like to know what is going on when I am out in the middle of a pond. Both of my kids got certified a couple of years later and last year my wife got involved. Knowing what is going on has saved us quite a few times. We also have active radar apps on our smartphones. Even when we are on vacation, we are always watching the sky.

Very cool me I lived in Va for the last couple of years and was really active with the hurricane season. We moved to Lawton about a month and a half ago so now I am becoming active in Tornado watching and Chasing.
 
We have some wild weather over here, and I have been always been a cloud watcher. I have done a lot of research over the last few years, and I am constantly watching the radar and different weather patterns.

I may not chase the storms, but I am constantly watching them. I have told my fiance I want to go out to the heartland and chase storms, she said I am crazy.

Well if you ever down toward my area you always got a partner to chase with I am almost done making my trailblazer look like a smaller version of this View attachment 34151

They have a build thread, iirc they come down to the US to do storm chasing during the warmer months. I have followed their thread since they started.

Same ones although our Supercells are almost never as large as yours and much less frequent. We live in Ontario's version of Tornado alley but we only see ~10 Tornadoes a year with most of them being F0. My chase partner is the weather guy I just go for the drive lol.

That picture was taken last year in Rozel, KS a few days before those big OK F5's, we drive down to your neck of the woods for 2 weeks each year, last year we put on about 10,000miles over that time mostly on Highway 83.

We have all the trucks mod info etc on our site Mesoholics, and some of it here in my build thread. This year we were going to get a weather station but financial circumstances have changed dramatically and it looks like the entire trip south is not going to happen unfortunately. :frown:

Saw the build for you pretty sweet. Right now i just have a cb and my laptop getting a cam for the dash and a gps. for the exterior some highpower roof lights and safari rack.
 
I have been chasing storms for YEARS now! I am very good friends with the Iowa Storm Chasing Network, who just released their own Tornado research vehicle. I will be going out with them this year from time to time, but when I don't, I will remain local. I will have to get some pictures of the gear in my Envoy, and once I figure out the new layout, I can post a few pictures of me and the guys. They are a phenomenal team! You may have even seen them on TV. I am also good friends with Doug Kiesling, who has a TV series on the Weather channel called Tornado Road.
 
All the pics being posted are great if anyone wants to show there chase vehicles lest see your set up.
 
No storms to really chase out here. I will get pics of the layout in my TB once I get things reorganized.

I understand totally mines coming along pretty well I am still working the design for my highpowered lights very needed with these storms out here.
 
Have never chased, but I am getting more & more into the science of prediction and am constantly trying to improve my knowledge of the models. Would love to chase just for the photos I could pull out of the trip. alone.
 
This weekend looks really good for Chasers (not so good for those who live there) My weather partner is saying that NW TX along our favorite road Highway 83 would be where we would head for today.

yeah it was pretty good we had some stuff come throught here not anygood pics though. East coast is going to get hit this weekend next weekend is going to be even better i should be able to get some good pics.
 
Be advised massive storms heading to the east coast already had one tornado north eastern oklahoma. Will be tracking a whole lot this week. if you any of you have any pics from the storms post them here and be safe yall
 
Same setup as last week being forecast already for late this week.... should be active again, I will be heading down most likely and will advise on potential locations.

One of the things I miss about living in central IL. Was moderately active in Peoria County IL Emergency Management Agency. Thinking of adding in my amateur radio and joining Pinellas County FL Skywarn, although only going to be active with an inbound hurricane. Would love to travel up to TX/OK and watch some real twisters, missed out on Washington IL storm by about a year.

I have had my fill with Hurricanes lol now its time for Twisters lol I have dopler on my laptop now and getting my ham radio liscence so i can add another radio to my rig.

I only had one look at a hurricane and that was the outskirts of it while I was on a ship off the coast of Norfolk, never again.

As for this weekend my chase partner and I are leaving at dawn tomorrow to head for OK, likely going to stop somewhere near Joplin and fine tune where we are going for Sunday. Right now it looks like anywhere from Childress, TX to Dodge City, KS are possible jump off points but he is going to fine tune his forecast as the day gets closer.

Right now it is a toss up between Oklahoma Panhandle and Iowa lol. We are in Fort Wayne right now and likely we are heading to Joplin then choosing one or the other...

I would stay one night and wait for Sunday. Something big is building ohh on CB i am on Channel 13 just call for Tobin

It looks like Iowa is going to be a hotbed of activity tomorrow by the looks of the models everything is pointing to at least some significant hail/wind and a very good chance of tornado activity. We altered our original plan and are camped out in Boonville, MO for the night... we actually hit a storm that produced a tornado an hour earlier on I70, but by the time it got to us it was just a decent thunderstorm with minor hail mixed in. As far as I know we are heading North-North West tomorrow morning towards Des Moines.

Pay close attention to the weather tomorrow everywhere from Iowa to Texas looks like it will have some activity, some Mothers Day :frown:

We have a traveling softball tourney tom just outside Des Moines. Have to be there at 8 in morn. We will be watching out, but if you have any info for us.. don't hesitate to pm me. I use tapatalk so get notifications instantly.
