So I have some friends who decided to change their air filter with a k&n filter. But they didn't purchase the full intake. Is there any advantage to this? It seems odd to me.

The general consensus is, performance wise, you're not getting much. Larger pores to allow more air flow, also filter less dirt/dust. The filter is washable and reusable, so you don't have to replace it, just have the downtime while it dries (unless you have a stock/backup filter to use in the meantime).

Same goes with the intakes, more or less. They look cool, can change the sound slightly if you remove the intake resonator and/or air filter cover resonator, but without a tune, the PCM will adjust for any changes, and you'll be running 'stock' within a few drive cycles.
