i purchased my blazer about 6 months ago and have just done a thorough inspection and tune up of it. it seems like i am missing something in the air box that seemingly let air bypass the filter and go straight in to the engine. any hints as to what this item is and where i can get it?

Pictures tell a thousand words. Get a pic of your airbox

you are probably talking about the thing on the tube that plugs into the airbox to use as a resonator.

sorry about that here y'all go. the first pic shows the three holes. the two on the top of the air box are connected. the second pic shows the hole in the intake tube and the hole it matches with on the top. i dont think any air is actually going through the air filter because this filter is over a year old and still looks brand new

If that's all you have, you're missing the air filter cover.

the black part next to the air filter is the top, just flipped over so you can see the two hole that are connected.

Is that not the hose that feeds the air injection pump.

i dont have an air injection pump. it is not a California vehicle though. i have heard maybe some type of pressure sensor that tells the computer if the air filter is bad, but i haven't found anything yet.
i almost want to duct tape the cover shut so the air has to go through the filter

Air pump comes in on the bottom or rear side closer to the throttle body.

Is that, let's call it, port covered by the air box? If so, I would think that that's how it's supposed to be.

Bro when you put that cover on it covers that hole and seals it. The cover is also a resonator. Looks complete to me
there are two holes in the top of the air box. one connects to the "intake tube" the other doesnt connect to anything. (on the picture i shared its right next to the air filter) that hole and the one that is connected to the "air tube" are connected inside the air box top allowing air to go through there instead if the filter. i am wondering if there is anything to stop that from happening.

these two holes are the ones i am taking about... they are connected inside the air box allowing air to flow into the engine without going through the air filter. thats why i think i am missing something.

When you start the TB there is an air pump that pushes air into the cat to speed the heat up proses. when you start the TB listen for a whine that last a few seconds.

Sorry, but I have to call you out. Not all models came with the air injection system. Also, it's pushing air into the intake, not the cat. But it's purpose is to warm the cat up quicker to reduce emissions.

i tested it with water since i didnt have an air compressor that had enough volume to show any results. water does flow though pretty freely...

That's what I ended up doing, but do you know if anything that's supposed to be there?

I wouldn't cover anything, just put the cover back on and leave it alone. It's a weird shaped deal with two different chambers, mine has a small spout like piece coming from the front right corner that lets air in. That piece pops out when cover is off. At times I think my engine is suffocating. A couple years ago it was running like crap and i pulled a huge mouse nest out of the air box cover. It ran great once it was it getting air.

Do you have a full pic of the air intake box on the underside? Here is a pic for reference of the underside of the air box from my 07 TBLT.

Mine is the same, it just doesn't have the white ring around the little hole. Have you checked to see if the two holes are connected? Mine are connected so freely that air isn't going through the filter.

No, but I would assume they are the same design. I took the stock air box off shortly after buy the TB when I upgraded to the K&N performance intake. If your air box looks the same as mine, then I would say that you are not missing anything. I saved everything from my stock intake system.
