The air bag control module is constantly running a diagnostic to make sure that ALL bags are connected, and ALL impact sensors have their wiring intact. And the PCM runs a diagnostic to make sure it can communicate to the air bag module (also known as the SRS).
Only a high end scan tool or a GM Tech II tool can talk to the system and ask it specifically what's wrong. I'd call around to independent mechanics or a trustworthy dealer and see if they can run the diagnostic. Cheap scan tools won't do the job. It's important enough to pay somebody to diagnose it properly, then you can get an idea how much it's going to cost to fix.
If the mechanic localizes it to a sensor or wiring harness, a simple inspection of the wiring may show a loose connector or a wire that has its insulation cut and touching sheet metal or something easy. Or it could be a corroded front impact sensor, which happens a lot in salt-using states because it's out there behind the front bumper on a frame crossmember reinforcing tube.
