I got all my transfer case oil, rear diff oil, spark plugs, end links, anti-seize and brake grease. I will be picking up my CPAS at 5pm when it comes in. We skipped the brakes because after checking them, we seen that they are only worn down half way, so they still have life to them.

Now time to put the youngins down for a nap and get to work!! This should be interesting lol

:iagree: Just make sure you loosen any fill plugs before you do the drain plugs and it'll be cake!

Wow...so the old spark plugs are NASTY and they are definitely NOT 41-103's they are 41-981's.

Not only were they 41-981's...but they are shorter than the 103's....about oh...I don't know half an inch. Maybe less. Here are some pictures.

Update- The plugs are officially all done!! And I can say it had made a world of a difference! It idles so much smoother, no more rough idle at all. The shift is extremely smooth, to the point where I don't even feel it shift anymore....I actually have to listen to the engine to know when it shifts(or look at the tach). I'm so glad I decided to put the spark plugs on our to do list today. Very happy with the outcome!

Next up on the list is the transfer case and rear diff. Then off for a 45 minute one way drive to go get the new CPAS. After that we will be done for the day. Mat wants to spray PB blaster on the end links every day for a few days as we don't have anything to cut them off. So I'm thinking those will be done next Thursday or Friday.

Where do you have to go for the CPAS?

Ft. Madison. Just did the rear diff....it needed to be done badly. The oil was thick and black. On a good note we have both a drain plug and fill plug which made life easier lol. We cant do the transfer casevyet though cuz we dont have a big enough allen wrench at the house. Mat has it at work so we will do it tomorrow.

Good thing you put the right plugs in. It's important to have the right length plugs in there so the threads don't get messed messed.

Is there oil in your plug wells? The old plugs look a bit oily?

I didnt check. Hubby said it looked pretty clean in there. I will ask again. Why is that a bad thing?

I thought Matt and you have already done all of the required maintenance a long time ago? Why are you just getting around to it now a year later? It's just disheartening to see all the time you've spend posting and realizing nothing was being done to the voy.

Me, too! I thought at the very least you had checked the plugs for being the right model number! Heck, I'm ready to go back in time and rescind my approval for you to spend the time and money to get married. :hissyfit:

The 41-981's aren't the wrong plug, but they might be the originals. How many miles on your 'voy again?
The 41-981's were superseded by the 41-103s.

Good luck with the rest of the work!

Cheers-

No oil in the wells. As far as why I havent gotten around to it.....well there was the t stat issue then power steering then the water pump which resulted in 2 broken bolts in the block, then the engine restore my husband put in the truck, and after all that I figured having my dad walk me down the aisle before he died was much more important than spending the money on the truck. Oh and it hasnt been a year yet. :raspberry:

I have 120k miles on it.

The front differential was done before. the oil wasnt that bad at all. light grey color. at least someone did to that to the truck. I must say thank god lol from mayos videos with that 18 mm socket i thought i was gonna be in for a treat after the rear oil came out black... the rear oil plugs were not bad either.

Ahh. Looks can be deceiving. They are in fact the same height. With the help of Microsoft Paint.

:iagree: My late '04 built MY05 had the 41-981's as well. Changed mine @ 110000 miles.

@Voymom: That surface rust stuff at the bottom of the ceramic isn't what makes the old plugs "nasty" - far more important is what the electrode parts looked like. You've already seen a significant improvement from changing them, but if the old plugs were fouled it might be an indication of general engine health, and if there are problems, the new plugs may experience the same degradation sooner than you would expect. Here's a few pics of mine when pulled, and a link to a pretty good site for info on reading plugs (though you may have already discarded your old ones): NGK Spark Plugs USA

Wargawd thank you for that link. I do think that Mat tossed them but I will double check and then
compare them to the ones on that website. The wells were in good shape much like yours in your thread. Thanks again!!

Edit- So I was able to scrounge one out of the trash (yuck) here is the picture. Maybe those who can read them better can let me know if I am correct when saying it is worn normally.

That one looks OK. Keep digging. Lol. If they all look like that you are good. But if your idle has changed as much as you say then at least one of them is either damaged or fouled in some way. New plugs will generally not solve any problems unless the old ones are not within normal wear spec.

OK. And you torqued the plugs to 13 ft/lbs right? Not trying to be picky but aluminum heads are kind of sensitive to that.

Yes he did. I made sure to ask lol. We are both a bit gun shy when it comes to tightening stuff on the truck after he busted 2 water pump bolts in the block last May. I think it took him 5 minutes per plug to tighten as he went very slowly.

I found the other plugs....let me just say that digging through the trash is gross dedication lol. I took 2 pictures per plug at different angles.

I didn't check the picture sizes just because I figured the bigger they were the better you could see the details. These are all of them! Glad I don't have to dig around in the trash anymore. I took this picture after driving around for 2 hours last night. It handles so much better, seems to have more power as well.

This was hwy driving as well. But I have NEVER in the lifetime of this truck seen my MPG's this high. I was pulling about 16MPG hwy and 12-13.5MPG city

Lol Well I had shorts on...granted they were very short shorts but nonetheless they were there :raspberry: and those are my legs, no stripper friends needed for this one. Although now that you mention it, I would be curious to see what they would come up with as far as posing with a spark plug.....I'm guessing it could get kind of naughty lol

You might want to run this by NGK as a way to double their market share:undecided:...Mike
BTW holding the spark plug that way also serves as birth control...just sayin'
