2003 Envoy XL SLT AWD/4WD

Is there a way to test the AWD/4wd function on my Envoy. When the switch is changed to a AWD or 4WD postion, the light flashes then goes on steady. I hear the engagement motor whine. But it doesn't operate as if in 4WD. No power train codes, so I don't know if it's working electrically, but not mechanically.
