02 tb a/c on 85* plus days

ok so my ac runs really cold sometimes. when out side temp is over 85 it comes and goes. seems to be ok if at highway speeds untill come to a stop. then the fan clutch doesnt seem to kick in to cool things down . then the compressor kicks off and wont restart. i can stop the fan clutch with my hand. is the fan clutch my problem? when ac is working it is putting out 45 * at center vent. please help thanks

Very common problem on this year and model. You have a weak clutch coil assembly. When it gets hot, it cuts out. Sometimes you can take a shim out of the clutch assembly and close down the "airgap" thus resolving the problem. Most of the time it means a new compressor as new clutch/coil parts are impossible to find for this Sandor compressor. I had the exact same problem on my '02 SLT Envoy. A new (used) compressor solved the problem. HTH c good
