Time: Less than 5 minutes
Cost: give or take $25.
Tools: Flat head Screwdriver, Eye protection(unless you want little rust particles in your eyes), Gloves(I didn't wear any, but again, you're working on near rusty metal it should be a no brainer)

Locate the part on the vehicle.

The vent solenoid is located toward the rear of the gas tank. Photo taken directly below.

Step 1: Remove plug.

Step 2: Use screwdriver to press on the little nubs.

Step 3: Use screwdriver to unclip metal bracket, and then just slide the part out.

Reverse the directions to put the new piece in(cross your fingers and hope that gets rid of the engine code)

Thanks for this! Just to have one stop shopping on one thread - what was the RPO code that led you to changing this?

I needed this replaced and broke down for the 100 dollar dealer diagnostic. They quoted me ~$450 to replace it claiming that the tank needed to e dropped and such. It really is an easy job to change it out. I had the generic loose gas cap code. P0014? Not sure of the number anymore.

I was getting p0455 large leak or something to that effect. Tried replacing the gas cap, code was still there. changed the vent solenoid and no more code...it's only been a day though, so we'll see.

I had same problem git new gas cap and nothing, git quoted 300 to change and did it myself for 20$ and no more fault codes.

I had the same thing. P0455 and P0449 are evaporative system gross leak. They are commonly tied to the vent valve or purge valve. If you are lucky, it is just the gas cap. Smoke test is useful if you are not sure which one needs replaced.

Great article

Great article!

Quick question..... once the solenoid is replaced, should the check engine light go out right away after starting her up? Or is there a set amount of miles/engine starts that need to be met before the light goes out?

Thanks in advance.

The code I as getting was P0449. There was only that code. I haven't taken it back to advance auto to have the code read again yet.
