Driving home this afternoon and saw the red battery icon lit and my voltage gauge had dropped from the usual mid point to between the low number and mid. Pulled into local AAP and they ran the diagnostic which showed no output from the alt...also heard an odd mechanical clicking which was new. Decided to try getting home and started her up. Everything back to normal. No icon and gauge at usual needle position. No ticking at home when I raised the hood. On my second alt and was installed at about 100k miles...now at 170k. Any thoughts?

Better at a time and place of your choosing than the alternator's.

Picked up a replacement at AAP and had installed yesterday. Total cost $210. All's well. Thanks for the unanimous advice!
