Which year Denali XL cluster did I just buy?

I just picked up a Denali XL cluster from a junk yard. Don’t know which year its from. It also doesnt work in my ‘01 silverado z71.
The harness plug looks the same and it connects right up but the whole cluster doesnt operate besides the check engine light always staying on.

If this new cluster doesnt work with my ‘01, which model years will?

It looks like an OBS style gauge layout but if it's too new, it might not work with your 01. I plunked that part number into Google and according to this eBay listing, it's for 03-07 Yukons and Denalis.

It might work if you cut and kept the harness plug with it and try to compare between the 01 and later year schematics. Might not work at all if it won't communicate with the BCM and PCM.

That looks to be a 2003-2007 (classic) cluster.

2001-2002 are year specific. Dont know if its wiring, or something else.

The 99-02 clusters are different, at least on 1/2-ton trucks. Those have the big red lamp on the LH top side, which reports security & malfunction issues.

Always remember that while the 99-06 (and 07 'Classic') are considered a single generation, there are lots of distinctions between the 99-02 and the 03-06s. Besides the clusters, the ECUs are different. Given that, I doubt you'd be able to make that cluster work in your '01.

So grabbing the harness off the 03-06 Denali wouldnt help anything either? Im going back tomorrow to snip the harness tomorrow. Was hoping to find some similarities that I could work out.

Old Body Style. It's used mostly to distinguish between 07 NBS (New Body Style) and 07 OBS or "classic".

I'd check the pinouts on each (as in 'where do they connect at the ECU', as the ECUs are different, as well).

For reference, here's the 1500 / half-ton clusters:

99-02 (with 'Message Center' at top LH side):

03-06 (I think this is an '03-'04, given where the PRNDL is; this one also has DIC, which the Denali also has, more than likely)

The harness plug can be the same on both (and likely is, since you plugged the new one in) -- but with all the other differences with ECU version, pinouts, and even the CAN -- it will be very difficult to make the newer one work correctly.
