Got a 06 4.2 ll8 and was wondering what year engines are a direct replacement.

If I am remembering correctly, its 07-09. And a 06 engine can not be made to work. The reluctor? ring changed.
Someone will chime in I am sure with a thread about it.

This really confuses me as to how a 2006 can not be made to work with needing an 06?
I was saying that 06 could not be made to work with 07-09.. I guess I should have re-read it LOL. Baby has been keeping me up late, teeth coming in and he is not liking life at the moment (neither am I).

Not necessarily, like the FAQ says, an engine from 02-05 will directly bolt in (once you swap the ECT, fuel rails etc) while retaining the factory PCM/TCM and the existing wiring harness. But any engine from 06-07 can be dropped in with no worries, but 08-09 had undergone a lot of changes that make attempting it to swap a bigger hassle then it really is.
If I read this correctly a 03 4.2 can have a 02-05 engine drop right in without modifications? Is this correct?. I have a 03 that needs a engine and thought only 02 to 04 would be a drop in.

I figured we are in the same boat, except different year vehicles, plus look at it on the bright side, I bumped your post. lol, these engines are not cheap to rebuild or buy already rebuilt.

To also reply to the OP, yes, those are direct bolt ins into your 07 but you still have to reuse your PCM and wiring.
Hey guys. Back again. Trailblazer ext,same year 06. Motors out. Owner wants to have a used put in. Can i use a 02-05 if i swap over the fuel rail from the 06. What else would have to be swapped. I know i looked but i want to be sure so i can go over everything with the owner.
Ps. My 06 is up and running great. Ordered a complete 07 on ebay (was cheaper then rebuilding mine) plus the motor only had 77k miles and only cost 1050.00 shipped with 6 month warranty.

Should have mentioned only reason im checkin on difderent years is the owner can get a 02 tb 4.2 and a 04 envoy 4.2 both with good motors for 400 ea.

08-09 58, E67 ECM/T42 TCM
2003 will go into a 2006 as long as the 2006 PCM and harness is retained. You'll have to move the ECT sensor, swap fuel rails, and swap your AIR solenoid over. Otherwise bolt in.

Edit: with a caveat that the ignition coils are also different after 05. I'd recommend you keep the 06 valve cover with the newer coils.
