What the heck is this?

It is a clip or something on the inside of the lift gate.

What is it for?

it looks like the area where the rubber stoppers hit on the liftgate. The probably cut the plastic out so it didnt crack after many times being shut.

Just look at what's hitting it from the vehicle side. If there's nothing there for you, then somebody took them off for some dumb reason.

I apologize for my previous response. I didn't see your arrow. What your arrow is pointing at is where a pull handle for the liftgate used to be. The handle would be used to pull the gate shut when its fully extended.

Roadie, my '03 Envoy SLT has the strap. Maybe that was something else lost between '03 and '04.

Actually I think the later years got rid of the strap.

My 02 has one but I find it easier to just grab the edge of the liftgate itself. The strap hangs too low and being on the inside prevents a nice smooth single motion to close the liftgate

My 02 has one, my 08 does not. Looks like GM went from the strap to the handle in the bottom of the liftgate between 03 and 04.

Hey Mike, you have a rubber protection strip on the top of the bumper, my '05 did not have that, it was all paint.
