Have a 2008 SLE w/ sunroof 36000 miles. Wife has a daycare and is getting 2 more kids. need to transport 7 to from preschool. She loves her Envoy. Found an 06 SLT XL w/ everything except sunroof 59000 miles dealer will trade even up. Is it worth it? We had ours to 2 GMC dealers looking at Acadias and they are at 12 -13k for ours. The wife hates the Acadia though. Should I keep mine and buy a beater minivan for the 2 mile preschool commute?

***EDIT: the 06 has 49000 miles***

I am a firm believer of trading up, not down... like if I were to get rid of my '07 SS, I wouldn't do it for a '03 C5 Z06... it would have to be for an '07 or newer model... but that's just my theory on trades...

plus, when you buy used, you always buy someone else's problems...

I'd keep the '08, might be an even trade but not a fair one. They just gonna make extra dollars off you and your well maintained truck and your getting a 2 year older truck with more miles and and little known about the history. For example did the 06 have the transfer case fluid changed at 50,000 miles? Doesn't sound like a good deal to get the 2 extra seats. If you can afford the beater van that's the way I'd go. It seems like a good deal for them but not for you. You wouldn't be too happy if you ended up with an '06 like mine with lots problems, and even though I have a '06 with problems I wouldn't consider a even trade for an '04.

If you decide to stay with your current Envoy you could add an aftermarket third row seat. It seems to me that this setup has more than enough room for the two additional children your wife needs to carry. Furthermore, the seat is removable and does not require drilling. Here is a link to the web page: GMC Envoy and here is a link to their Facebook photo gallery: https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.389891637706289.106410.250990354929752&type=3 The seat seems a little pricey but could, in the end be a more viable alternative. :twocents:

Good luck,
Andrew

Aside from the difference in age an maintnence, you should consider real world value. If it was me, I would price both trucks out on nadaguides.com and see what the gap is. NADA stands for national auto dealers association and is what most banks use to finance vehicles. KBB is popular but their numbers can be iffy a lot of the time.

Also understand that dealers don't always use guides like this for pricing, but more or less what they have in the truck and or a predetermined profit goal. In other words, they want to sell you their truck at retail and buy yours at wholesale. It's not that the dealer is being dishonest or trying to screw you out of a few grand, it's just what it takes to keep the business surviving

I agree with the above...I wouldn't trade for older either. I think there's just too much for us to even comment on here since so much is personal preference. While I have driven Acadia for months on end, I've got some opinions and it is likely a better family car due to the extra capacity I think they are still overpriced. Plust the early ones had issues when I researched them. Minivan's are so wildly unpopular but so darn practical you can get them really cheap. Really the best vehicle I've probably ever owned was a minivan. I could tow a 4000lb boat, bring home a full ton of bricks in it, and fit a 4x8 sheet of plywood and close the hatch.

As previously mentioned I wouldn't trade down either. You suggested a beater minivan....I would go that route.

People rag on minivan's but honestly they are so functional. I've always been partial to the Pontiac Montana and you can get those cheap since they are a dime a dozen.

Althou I think a Cheap Beater mini-van would be a good route to go, in comparison to the added 3rd row seat, its not so smart anymore.

Insurance for 2 vehicles instead of one
Repairs for 2 vehicles instead of one

Unless you just need to have a spare car for the both of you, I would go with that 3rd row option that Andrew posted earlier. Its meets the federal safety standards. Has Seat Belts. If mounted rear facing, would be easy to have the kids get in and out of. And is completely removable when the GMT takes on grocery getter role again.

To me, its the cheapest, sound, way to get the outcome you need, without dishing out a unknown amount on some other used car.

If I needed a 3rd row seating, its the way I would go (if my GMT could take a 3rd row).
