so i have 245/65/17 all around...however i have no spare so i have been looking to buy one. my winch/hoist end (the part that actually holds the tire in place rusted and fell off). i found one and its a 16" six lug full size spare tire on rim. Measures 245/70/16 with unused tread. would this be ok if i was stranded out somewhere? its a steal at 30 bucks. its in rhode island and im in mass but idont care.

245/65/17 and 245/70/16 should be the same size tire. A couple things you need to check, 1 make sure you do not have the larger brake rotors on the front as the 16" wheel will not fit on the larger brakes. (honestly forgot to check your vehicle specs on the side). 2 is it just a random 6 lug spare, or is it the correct 6x5 lug pattern that is used only on the GMT360.

Just checked your truck specs, the EXT has larger brakes in the front and the 16" spare will not fit.

i just asked him if it was a ext that it came out off...i guess it would not matter since the 16 wont fit the damn ext anyways. i guess im stuck trying to find a size 17 spare!

If you want to roll with the 16" spare, remember it will fit on the back axle. If you get a flat on the front however you would need to dismount one of the 17" wheels for the front, and swap on the 16" spare. A bit extra work if you get a flat, but a solution in the short term.

Yup this. The EXT has a bigger brake in the front than the standard short wheelbase that will not fit in a 16" wheel (the caliper hits the barrel). This workaround would suffice but I'd personally prefer to just find a 17" so as to not mess with all that.

I have to suggest going out of your way to find a full size spare. I've done this work around before and anything more than taking one tire off and one back on for a flat tire is a HEADACHE. Wife has a donught sized spare and moving a rear wheel up front so I can put a spare on the rear sucks. Full size will not fit in the trunk. But one does on our platform. Worth the convenience all day long. Plus you look like you take care of your sh!t by having matching rim sizes. Sure tire circumference/diameter is crucial, but I could imagine it looks goofy.

Tire rack has a 17" stainless steel black rim for $82 plus shipping right now. Rockauto was 120some. I would avoid a used spare unless it was a steal.

Sorry to dig up this old thread, but I have a question for other EXT/XL owners - What size spare came with the vehicle? I had a flat on the rear this morning, dropped my spare (hadn't done so before, I was just very glad my winch didn't bugger up like others have), and found a 255/65/16 on a horribly rusted rim. The tires on the truck are currently 245/65/17. Did a quick check online and found the circumfrances to be within 2% of each other, so I threw it on and off to work I went.

I'm thinking of picking up a used 17" alloy to replace the spare that came with the truck, I don't want to have to do the "spare tire shuffle" if I blow a front tire. Did GM really ship a "full sized" spare tire that can't be mounted on all axels? Or did the POS PO lose his spare and replace it with one that was "close"?

Not sure but my FIL's '05 EXT has a 17" spare rim with 265/45/17s. Same as the other four on the truck.

I answered my own question, just had to look at my door. Should've had a 17" spare. Another thing to curse the PO for.
