How does the Panasonic DVD player unbolt from the roof?

I have to fix the sun roof. I don't dee hidden bolts or panels. I did remove the 4 obvious bolts, but it didn't budge.

I think that might be a feature that many of us aren't familiar with. Can you post some pics, and maybe we can make some educated guesses on what needs to be done next?

Will try to post pics later today. Have to split for work.

2006 Trailblazer LT w/ceiling mounted Panasonic DVD player. It has a flip down screen.

There will be some clips that hold it into place into a plastic piece on top of the headliner. To release all you will have to do is pull downward with a slight jerking action. It will seem like it will not come out without breaking something but it should pop loose.

The only visible bolts are these four. One of the bolts came out but the others just loosened and then spin in place.

No visible plastic tabs. I hung off the thing like a monkey swings off a tree branch. The DVD player does not release.

I checked in GMSI, there are operational and trouble shooting steps, but nothing for the removal of the system.

I stuck with it and managed to remove the player. This image is the front (driver's side.) You can see the two black plastic fasteners that hold the unit up after the bolts are loosened (they do not have to be removed.) These plastic fasteners are tough, and they held like iron.

Another look at the plastic fastener on the front passenger side.

To release the player I used this small pry bar (about 7 1/4".) It's a great idea to pry only between the metal mounting bracket, in the vehicle's roof, and the metal frame of the DVD player. If you try to pull down on the edges of the plastic trim panel, you might get lucky and pull the whole unit off, but you run a real risk of breaking off the trim panel's attachment points. At bottom middle (in the above image) is one of the four attachment points that are prone to breaking. The screw head has a red, green and blue paint mark around it. I found two of these points already broken (it might have been me; I tried this project once before in the spring.)

Yeah most of us who have removed enough bits of our truck, recognize those plastic retainers. They are super strong the first time you try to get them out. But if you pull them out a few times, they soften up on you. Glad you got it out in 1 piece

The dome light console is removed by first taking out the map light lenses. Very simple, I used a 2mm standard screwdriver that I bought during my micro-heli phase. All it takes is an easy pry in the middle of the hinge (both sides.)

Had to run to Advance Auto and buy this torques set. It's a T20 for the sun visors and the overhead map light console and a T50 for the passenger seat belts.

Ready to pull out the back hatch. Not a great picture but that's what it looks like.
20190825_193422-jpg.90655

This is broken. Looks like a cable worked loose (top right) in the plastic cable box. It's possible that a trolley jammed first and then this cable box wore away.

On the kitchen floor. It's still jammed. Anyone know how to break the tracks free?

Yeah, used a block of wood and a hammer. Tapped at it until the glass slid forward. Lots of small broken bits of plastic.

You really have two options. What I did was buy the eBay/Amazon sunroof repair kit. There are different options, and it depends on how much if a rebuild you need. Option 2, salvage yard, and get a sunroof that is in unknown condition. I opted for the rebuild kit.

Is there a disconnect for the main headliner harness? The wiring harness runs behind a panel in the driver's side rear cargo area, and I don't see a connector.

I don't want to dissemble more of the interior on some wild goose chase.

Find @Mooseman signature. In it you will find a link to download the Factory Service Manual

I looked over those manuals, thanks Mooseman. There might be a connector under the floor in the back seat area. Hard to be sure.

Project on hold for a couple days; back to driving the car.

Seeing the pic of the taped up sunroof - makes me really glad I don't have one. Last thing I need is more sun going through to the interior and causing the leather to crack and deteriorate.

I took the TrailBlazer out for some short drives and the sunroof (and the sunroof frame) are still not installed. The roof panel (behind the sunroof opening) develops a terrible vibration.

To what extent is the sunroof frame a structural component of the body?

I'm not sure if the sunroof opening is grabbing wind and causing a harmonic oscillation, or maybe the roof panel is resonating off a drive-line imbalance. (Should probably block the sunroof opening temporarily and take a test drive.)

Is there a wind deflector at the front of the opening? If not, that's your problem. It's part of the sunroof frame.

The frame assembly looks like it has a wind breaker (of sorts.) It springs up into position when the sunroof slides back.

I taped this plywood cover over the hole. If if holds long enough during a test drive, I'll have my answer.
