I had been in the market to replace my busted and worn out sun shade. After seeing a retractable sun shade on TV somewhere, (2 vertical roll up shades that latch onto hooks mounted up by the headliner) it reminded me how inconvenient it was to have to throw mine in the back seat, or in the cargo section depending on how many people were riding with me. So I figured with spring coming, I'd look into them.
I trolled Ebay for a bit, and saw a lot of variations, but most of the roll up types had unattractive patterns on them, or were just tinted but still see through. I came across this version, which retracts horizontally, and is a plain silver color. Here's the company's page
Dash Designs - The Shade™ : The original, pleated, fully retractable sunshade!
They have multiple sizes depending on the make and model of vehicle. For $40, I decided to pull the trigger and give it a shot, this one was from Ebay seller Advantage Distributing. When it showed up a couple days later, all of the models of vehicles and their sizes were listed on the back of the box. The GMT 360/370/305s take a 21" version.
In the box you get the shade itself, 3 mounting tabs backed with 3M double sided tape, and an alcohol pad to prep the glass.
Installation is easy. Attach the hooks to the posts on the shade, then hold the shade up on the windshield with one hand. Pull the handle across to the driver's side with the other hand and make adjustments to determine what height you want the shade mounted. I opted to have the top of the base/handle in line with the tint strip on the glass. Then peel the backing off of the 2 mounts on the shade's base and position the shade on the passenger side of the windshield, do the same on the driver's side with the handle, and that's a wrap.
Here's my shade installed in the open position. (I could have put the top mount a little more flush to the A pillar, but no biggie)
From their pictures, the shade is supposed to dip behind the rear view mirror, here's how mine looks closed in that manner.
I would prefer it to sit in front of the mirror, so I tucked the shade that way. It does catch a little bit on the mirror's post (had to put the mirror as high up as possible, which didn't change visibility at all) and the wire feeding in from the headliner. Flipping down the visors helps take some of the stress off the shade itself, but I may take it out and cut a small provision for the rear view mirror parts.
The shade is easily removable. A gentle upward tug will free it from it's hooks. I've only had it in for a couple of days so far, but I do like the convenience. It's pretty thin and doesn't hinder visibility on the passenger side. Sometimes light will reflect off the gloss black finish and catch my attention, so that will take some getting used to. If I like this shade enough, I may pull the windshield mounts off, and put mounting notches in the A pillars for a cleaner installation. But that's TBD at a later date.
