It's been about 7 months since my last oil change and I have only put 5100 easy miles on it...the oil looks a little dark but smooth with no particles...is there a expire date? It's Quaker state oil and Napa filter.

Your owner's manual indicates: your engine oil and filter must be changed at least once a year and at this time the OLM system must be reset

There's a chance your oil will turn acidic after a year. I'd say one year max. Oil is way cheaper than a rebuild.

Might as well change every 6 months then. $30 twice a year is a no-brainer to me. Then, might also do it with the time change, then it's easy to remember; and here this weekend, too!

The guide should be the oil life monitor, or one year.

more often is just a waste of resources. (unless you have evidence of contamination in the oil)

(and I used to be a 3000 mile man)

Great responses. I changed the oil and used synthetic I shouldn't need to change it until 10k mi ±.
My engine runs fine purrs right, tranny gets a little bitchy at times but not a concern really as I don't hammer on my vehicle. Someday I'll get the pcm tune.

did you reset the oil monitor? following from your owners manual:

How to Reset the CHANGE ENGINE OIL
Light
The GM Oil Life System calculates when to change
your engine oil and filter based on vehicle use. Anytime
your oil is changed, reset the system so it can
calculate when the next oil change is required. If a
situation occurs where you change your oil prior to a
CHANGE ENGINE OIL light being turned on, reset the
system.
To reset the CHANGE ENGINE OIL light, do the
following:
1. Turn the ignition key to RUN with the engine off.
2. Fully press and release the accelerator pedal slowly
three times within five seconds.
3. Turn the key to LOCK.
If the CHANGE ENGINE OIL light comes back on when
you start your vehicle, the engine oil life system has
not reset. Repeat the procedure.
For vehicles with the Driver Information Center, see
Driver Information Center (DIC) on page 3-48
to reset
the system

That process should reset the smarts in the computer that keep track of how you drive and decide when to turn on the oil light.

(assuming you do not have the Drivers Info Center that lets you choose between display of time, miles, trip odometer, average MPG, instant MPG, miles till empty. and of course Oil Life.in percent)

Not every GMT-360 has the oil life monitor. It appears that those that were rentals they were disabled and possibly deleted.

I agree with the one year expiration. Oil being used and then sitting around that long without the mileage should be changed. All the grades of amsoil says one year/25K miles.
If you aren't doing that much driving, an oil change once a year is still saving money.

After you do the gas peddle three times wait for the CHANGE ENGINE OIL light to blink back at you before turning the ignition off (to LOCK). The system doesn't reset until the light blinks.

Uh there's no light flashing nor there was never a light lit up prior to the oil change.

The oil change light will light when the engine computer thinks its time to change the oil. However without a DIC or Scan Gauge type reader hooked up, you don't really know when the light pops up. But when you do the reset that light will blink back at you to acknowledge you pressed the peddle three times. As I found out the hard way, the reset will not take until the light blinks. It takes - maybe - five seconds to start blinking after you've pushed the accelarator three times.
