Ok here are some teaser pics of the new intake I made.

Parts

1 3" I DIA, 45* electrical conduit
1 10" long x 3" I DIA straight electrical conduit
1 90* 1/4" NPT nylon barb
JB Weld
PVC cement
1 3 1/4" ID flange air filter (used from previous intake)

The 45* pipe is the perfect angle to go to the airbox.

I will get more pics next time I remove the air box cover.

I gutted the stock airbox, to make a "heat" shield, and with the headlight washer holes it lets a little of fresh air into the engine bay to help cool the charge.

I am also going to modify the stock resonator to act as a cover. I am to far past going back to stock now.

I have a few cans of white primer and some silver rustoleum I think I will use. I would like to color match but the little cans of duplicolor are pricey at $7 each, and I would need like 3 cans.

PVC 45* bend was about $8, I had the straight pipe laying around (but at lowes it is like $6 for 3' if I remember correctly), the cement is like $3, JB Weld was $5, Nylon 1/4" barb was $2. Air filter is a K&N 10" long cone filter, I think I paid like $50 for it, it came off of my old intake so free for this build. So all said an done around $75. Took me an hour to make, and another 30 min to make some adjustments.

Ok I dug the resonator out of storage and I started my rough cutting of it, it needs some refinement but overall it makes the engine look better than having wires showing everywhere. Took me about and hour and half using a hand saw and my Kershaw. I need to clean it up and paint it.

This is the first time in 3 years a resonator has been on the truck, I like the look of it and If I can the time to paint the intake and the resonator I think it will look awesome. Thinking either silver intake tube, and blue resonator, both blue, or leave the resonator black and paint the tube silver, or blue. :undecided:

like the resonator/engine cover idea, looks nicer than coil packs

Thank you sir. Kind of wish I would have done this before I tapped for the hoses, oh well guess I can plug the one I did and run the new one under the resonator. I need proper sized hose too.

So then what's another $25 to top it off, and complete it the way you want.:smile:

Sorry to zombie this thread, but I have a (noob) question: what is the purpose of the big plastic resonator on our TB's? Obviously it isn't necessary as the OP hasn't had his on for three years. Is it primarily decorative?

Noise reduction. It acts as a baffle to absorb noise made when you increase the amount of air going into the engine. Every vehicle made (except performance or big trucks) will have a form of resonator. Some will be one single piece like ours, some will be 2 or even 3. It depends on the vehicle.

And now I know. Thanks, Blazin!

Forgot it also acts a cover to hide the ignition coils, and other parts of the engine. Better than the whole engine covers some cars have.

You should know too mine is gutted, it can never be used for a stock intake system again. All it does is sit over the PVC pipe I used as my charge pipe. Did that mainly for looks though, no other purpose served.

Why'd you originally take it off? How loud is it? Ridiculous?

Not really loud, it has a throaty sound to it. I removed it when I built the first intake. If I was going to remove the factory tube I figured I might as well go all the way.

Regarding the extra noise after building a custom intake... When I cut a hole in my air box for an extra 2" pipe, all of the extra noise went away. It could simply be that the noise is created by the restrictions in the stock intake, and removing those restrictions eliminates the need for a resonator.

Did you run a second pipe to another air filter? I don't fully understand. If so, did you see any performance change?

Maybe this picture will help. Since the stock airbox only has a 2" hole feeding the 3" intake pipe that we use, I thought a second 2" hole cut in the airbox would help improve how the engine breathes. I made a short section of pipe that fits between the radiator and the frame, and used a heat gun to open up the end of the pipe so it could collect cold air from the grill area as I drive down the road. I effectively doubled the amount of air coming in to the airbox in front of the filter.

Unfortunately I do not do a lot of highway driving, so no, I have not seen any performance improvement from adding this second pipe. It likely would not make much difference except at higher RPMs. However for my normal driving, there was an improvement in response between using the stock and custom intake pipes between the airbox and throttle body.

First picture of the thread, I gutted the stock air box cover. It is just a shell and completely open in the front. Noise level did not change after this mod

Ah. I get it now. Thanks for explaining!

Interesting. What do you attribute it to?

Interesting... I wonder what the difference is? My rumble went away completely just from adding this small extra hole. The only other engine mods I've made are the PCM tune and the exhaust resonator delete.

I still have the resonator. No tune but that will come at some point.

Jared I gutted the air box as it is a common mod for both aftermarket intake and stock guys. When I get time I willtake better pics to show you what I did. If you ever pull the headlights they have a small hole between headlight and turn signal. I also bought a colored matched grill with the holes for the headlight washers. This gives me fresh air right to the intake filter.
